While it's long been rumored to be in the works, it has been officially announced that director Rob Marshall and actor Johnny Depp will follow up their upcoming film 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' with a remake of the classic 1934 film 'The Thin Man'.
Based on the Dashiell Hammett novel of the same name, 'The Thin Man' follows retired detective Nick and his beautiful young heiress wife Nora as they engage in their "favorite hobby" (drinking), banter back and forth with brilliant comic timing, and solve a friend's murder. Though there was only one novel involving the characters, the original film was followed by five sequels, so there is definitely potential for a franchise. Originally portrayed by William Powell, it's safe to assume that Depp will be playing the lead role of Nick, with a yet-unnamed actress playing Nora (memo to producer: pleeeease don't let it be Helena Bonham Carter).
There is no announced release date yet, but Marshall aims to begin shooting after Depp has completed Disney's 'The Lone Ranger' (in which he is set to play Tonto), as to give him and producer John Deluca enough time to find just the right leading lady to cast as the quick-witted Nora. While Depp is a talented actor, I just don't know if audiences are ready to see him play yet another witty drunkard (although he'll most likely swap out the Keith Richards look for something more dapper).

Comment by Blue Tattoo on May 10, 2011 at 10:32pm I can see this. Would rather see someone like Robert Downing Jr. as Nick Charles, but Johnny Depp is a good actor and could do a good portrayal.

Comment by Cranky Old Dude on May 10, 2011 at 6:46pm Actually, this could be a lot of fun. I think either Depp or Downy would be perfect. The kicker is an actress who could hold her own (Amy Adams?) and the dialog. Keep it set in the 30's Hmmm. I like it, but would audiences go for something like that? Make it "modern"? What ever the f*** that is these days, set it in the here and now. Tough choice as I am not sure that the Dashiel Hammett justice.
Another movie in that vein I would love to see remade and you could probably get away with putting it in the here and now would be "Topper" Two swinger, martini drinking ghosts, a drunken Saint Bernhard, and an uptight banker has great possibilities.
