Indomitable Entertainment has snagged James Marsden (the'X-Men' franchise), Thomas Jane ('Hung'), and Billy Bob Thornton ('Bad Santa') to star in their new man vs. nature thriller 'Red Machine.' The story will follow a pair of long-separated brothers reuniting during a camping trip they take with their girlfriends. The happy occasion turns deadly when they are attacked and subsequently hunted by an enormous bear. Thornton is set to play a well-known bear expert tasked with hunting down the grisly grizzly. David Hackl ('Saw V') will direct from the script penned by screenwriting rookie J.R. Reher. Hackl stated that he is interested in the project because "an audience is more easily drawn in by a story that they consider plausible and relatable -- something that could actually take place in the real world."
So Joe Carnahan's 'The Grey,' which sees cinema's own force of nature Liam Neeson battling wolves, will be released next week and now this? Are we entering a new era of man vs. beast films? Please, oh mighty Cthulhu, let the answer be yes. As much as I am in no way a proponent of 'Saw V,' I have to give Hackl props for his assessment of the concept here. It's high time horror films moved toward more plausible conceits and away from supernatural found footage. What's really got me jazzed about this, however, is my unbriddled love for the work of 70s horror auteur William Girdler who gave us, among others, the beast attack movies 'Day of the Animals' and 'Grizzly.' If you haven't seen 'Grizzly,' I highly recommend you do so before seeing 'Red Machine.' It's exceedingly campy and very much a product of its time, but the practical effects used to create the titular ursine are outstanding and lend a certain amount of spine-tingle to the attacks. Hopefully 'Red Machine'will have the good sense to use at least some measure of practical effects as well so we won't have to bear too many awful CGI shots.
What do you guys think?
