Marc Webb Officially Directing Next Spider-Man Film

When Sony rebooted Marvel's Spider-Man this last summer, they did so under the direction of '(500) Days of Summer's Marc Webb. Seeming generally pleased with the resulting 'Amazing Spider-Man,' or more to the point its tremendous box office earnings, the question lingered as to whether the studio would be be signing Webb to helm future installments in the newly revamped franchise. The prospect of Webb's return began to look doubtful when it was revealed that he had an obligation to Fox to direct "a post-'(500) Days of Summer' film." Now it seems that obstacle has been hurdled as it's been officially announced that Webb will return for 'Amazing Spider-Man 2,' set to hit theaters May 2, 2014. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will also be returning to reprise their roles as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy respectively.

The big rumor this news puts to bed, moreso than Webb's possible departure from the franchise, is that the studio was not happy with Webb's approach to 'The Amazing Spider-Man.' If there was any beef between Webb and the studio, it looks to have been put to rest. Instead of surrendering to the knee-jerk reaction of dread, I'm going to look on the bright side here. True though it was that I didn't care much for 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' the thing that admittedly bothered me most about it was the flubbed romance between Peter Park and Gwen Stacy. The action sequences were actually pretty outstanding and it was nice to see touches from Spidey canon return after being left out of Raimi's version. So perhaps the next chapter will not focus so much on that relationship and present a larger villainous challenge for Spider-Man.

What do you guys think? Happy Webb is returning? Or were you hoping someone else would take the reigns?

@Cookie: To me Peter Parker is a likeable academically brilliant but unpopular high school senior student who is bitten by a radioactive spider and gains spider-like abilities who later became a superhero, a photographer for The Daily Bugle and a Columbia College physics student as Tobey Maguire played him in the outstanding trillogy of movies. Peter was also written like this in the Spider-Man animated series from 1994 and in The Specacular Spider-Man even though he wasn't a College physics student in the second show.

Andrew Garfield plays Peter Parker as a selfish and ungrateful jerk who hates being responsible for the things he forgets to do and I hated that because that's not who Peter Parker is.

I think we are at a generation that is so afraid of liking anything that might ressemble twilight that every movie with a teen romance gets thrown into the same category, deserving or not

Yet again, we come across another endless terrain of whining for this movie. Why? BECAUSE THEY REBOOTED IT AND OH NO, HOW DARE A STUDIO MAKE MOVIES TO HOLD ON TO THEIR MOVIE RIGHTS?

Oh and it was the best Spider-man movie so far. Andrew was a better Peter Parker, and Emma Stone was an infinitely better love interest. Plus, the CGI and soundtrack was really great. That whole high school fight scene in the hallway? ALL CGI. Sewer fight? ALL CGI. You probably didn't even know that since it looked so good.

I thought it was funny how the swinging in this movie is more realistic, but in the videogame based on it, it's like it was in the Raimi movies again. I don't hate the Raimi movies, they're still good Spidey movies, but this one is better.

@Hector

Why? It makes more sense than turning him into a manchild like Raimi did.

@Herman: Yeah I hated that they made Peter a mordden teenager in the movie.

@Hector

What is the "yeah" referring to?

This time I'm going to wait until Amazing Spider-Man 2 gets to the dollar theater before I go see it. (And I presume it will be called Amazing Spider-Man 2 because the studios will want to save Spectacular Spider-Man for the next time they will inevitably want to reboot the franchise.)

If it were heresy to change icons then we'd be stuck with 60's Batman.

I thought that The Amazing Spider-Man was leagues better than any of the shlock Sam Raimi came out with and I eagerly await information about the plot of this sequel.
Something odd I have noticed is that critics/audiences over here in England loved The Amazing Spider-Man but the same in the US were extremely divided on it - Whaddup wid dat?

Personally, I'm meh with Webb returning, but I wish they'd can Horner or whoever mixed the score together. I felt his soundtrack overpower certain scenes like the end sequence where Gwen was hiding from the Lizard.
