As the smoke from the Earth-shattering success of Joss Whedon's 'The Avengers' starts to clear, the focus returns to the followup Marvel sequels. 'Iron Man 3' recently began production in North Carolina and now it seems 'Thor 2' is starting to pick up steam as well. Months ago it was reported that Alan Taylor ('Game of Thrones') would be taking over as director and now it looks like Mads Mikkelsen ('Casino Royale') is in talks to play the film's villain, or at least one of the villains. The studio is being very hush hush about who specifically Mikkelsen may be playing, but with Tom Hiddleston's Loki apparently still having a major part in the sequel, it's quite possible that Mikkelsen will not be the principal baddie. 'Thor 2' will begin filming this summer with a proposed release date set for November 15th, 2013.
I'll be completely honest with you, apart from Loki and the Frost Giants, I have absolutely no concept of Thor's rogues gallery. I can make blind guesses as to who Mikkelsen might play, but it would be a regurgitation of names I read on Wiki or the Marvel Directory with no frame of reference for whether he would be a good fit for those various characters. That being said, Mikkelsen was an outstanding Bond villain and I think evil suits him quite well. He's got a sinister presence and can deliver verbal jabs at the hero with icy disdain. As much as I think Tom Hiddleston has done a dynamite job with Loki, we've had two Marvel movies now in which he's been the villain. Therefore I hope he isn't once again the chief antagonist in 'Thor 2.'
What do you guys think? Are you excited at the prospect of Mikkelsen playing the villain? Who do you think he might play?

Comment by Afro Heisenberg on May 25, 2012 at 2:08pm Mads Mikkelsen is an incredible actor and I’m glad he’s in the film. That being said, I don’t think anyone can have any real idea over who he’s actually going to be till it’s officially announced. He could be a villain from Earth, from Asgard, from one of the other nine realms we know about, or from one of the unknown realms Loki referred to in Avengers (baring in mind that of all the marvel heroes, Thor is the most likely to possibly interact with Thanos in some way before an Avengers sequel), OR he could be specifically created for the film kind-of like Mickey Roucke’s character in Iron Man 2.
I’m glad Loki will at least appear in the next film, and whatever happens I hope we get to see more of the supporting cast already introduced (though can someone PLEASE give Natalie Portman something interesting to do, she is only an oscar-winning actress after all). Thor + Game of Thrones should equal awesome, and as long as the script is tight it should be a really good film.
Comment by SrgCoconut on May 25, 2012 at 2:05pm Im thinking theres a good chance he might be playing Mephisto
Comment by Joobless on May 25, 2012 at 11:50am I swear that for at least two years I thought that Mads Mikkelsen and Michael Madsen were one and the same. Seriously, it's not fair to have two people famous for playing psychopathic characters looking that alike and having that similar names!
I doubt they'll start mixing in greek/roman mythologies...most likely Malekith, with Kurse thrown in. Kinda sucks though, I was really hoping for something a little cheesy like the Wrecking Crew!
Comment by Tom on May 25, 2012 at 11:31am No more Loki. We've had enough of him.
Comment by Richie Vega on May 25, 2012 at 11:19am My pic: Ares - The son of Zeus and Hera, he was worshipped as the god of war in ancient Greece and Rome. Ares dissatisfaction with Zeus' rule of Olympia began after Zeus' decree that worship of the Olympians should be allowed to die out.

Comment by GodDamnRobots on May 25, 2012 at 9:15am If you wanna see him kick ass as a Norseman, watch the first, oh, 30 or so minutes of Nicolas Winding Refn's "Valhalla Rising." He kills a guy by tearing his guts out with his bare hands and breaks from captivity using only a stone arrowhead.
Has anyone seen a film called Flame and Citron? Mikkelsen plays a Danish resistance figter during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. The amount of Nazis he kills in that movie would make Brad Pitt blush. I'll see anything with this guy.
