'Mad Max: Fury Road' Not A Sequel Or Prequel?

Will we ever see George Miller's fourth installment of the Mad Max franchise? Charlize Theron sure seems to think so. What's more, Theron has let slip some very interesting information about 'Mad Max: Fury Road.' During a recent interview, Theron confirmed that she is still definitely starring in the film and that it won't in fact be a sequel nor will it be a prequel. She referred to the film as a re-imagining of the story with Tom Hardy reinventing the Mad Max character. However, she then admitted to being a bit unsure as to whether Hardy was actually still signed on to play the lead role. As of this moment, the flip-flopping reboot (apparently) has no release date.

If this news is legit, that 'Fury Road' will be a re-imagining instead of a sequel or prequel, I would argue it is in fact great news. Allowing Tom Hardy to make the character his own instead of forcing him to recreate Mel Gibson's classic portrayal of the roguish hero of the wasteland is a far more interesting approach. However, I'm not about to take Ms. Theron's word as gospel. If it were George Miller relaying this info that would be one thing, but with the film's future still very much unclear, it seems strange that the female lead would be telling the press intimate details about the plot. Also, she couldn't even say definitively whether the star of the movie is still the star of the movie so you'll forgive me if I'm dubious of the other information she's spouting.

What do you guys think? Would you prefer 'Fury Road' not be a sequel/prequel? Or at this point, do you not even care anymore?

So I'm gonna jump right in and say. You couldn't make it a prequel.  What would that be?  Him meeting his wife?  The whole first movie had him as a regular guy which is what makes the character so appealing.  His changing of his ways.  You know.....with a montage.....and a putting on of battle armor........and the whole my vengeance will not go unquenched.  That's what made the first movie great.  Though imagine this.   A prequel about the formation of the gang and that area.  Nah.  Still sounds like garbage.  I agree also with whoever said you slap the "Mad Max" name on anything just to make a quick buck.....but also, that being said, "I think the movie re imagined minus Theron and keep Hardy. Throw in Andy Serkis with the lead villain as a mongoloid, and....well I can't think of anymore.

Ok, so I wasn't totally correct as to what the first movie was about.  My apologies.  However, I still stand by what I said.  A prequel makes no sense.

It's time to do a real movie with really good effects..3d... not needed.. People are starving for a plot and only Sci Fi specials have tried this Genre.... and as always due to budget, failed miserably. Max was a great movie and an update in technology is what it needed to really make the story come to life.. as long as the director doesn't try to channel Michael bay it will turn out great.

Better they make it a reboot, instead of a prequel. Because if it's bad, we still have the original ( eg Star Wars, Indiana Jones). But if it's good, we can enjoy it, and look forward to the possibility of more ( eg Star Trek)

I'd like to see a prequel.  if they did that right it would be awesome.

Slapping the Mad Max name on it really just seems to be a cheap cash in. There's no need to do another Mad Max unless you're doing a completely split off story set in that universe or if you could somehow get Mel to do it again. I don't follow hollywood news, I don't know if Mel would even consider doing another one. THough if I heard he was I would definately go see it.

If this thing was coming out and it didn't have the Mad Max name on it, it'd just be another generic blah action movie set in the desert...then people would complain it ripped off Mad Max. I'm not happy with this news...nor am I happy that Charlize Theron is opening her mouth and not putting a damn sammich in there. Put some meat on them bones again, skinny!

I hope Hardy refuses...this movie will only piss off Mad Max fans....

If this happens, I'll probably end up seeing this, if only for watching Tom Hardy on screen kicking ass.
