Luhrmann Adds Newcomer Debicki to 'Great Gatsby' Cast

Source: Deadline

Visual director Baz Luhrmann has tapped fellow Australian Elizabeth Debicki to play the role of Jordan Baker in his imminent 3D adaptation of 'The Great Gatsby'. Debicki, a recent graduate from the Victorian College of the Arts was an unlikely choice for the role of Baker - a famed golfer and love interest for protagonist/narrator Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) - especially considereding the long A-list of actresses who auditioned for the role.

Luhrmann commented:

"[Casting Debicki] was a surprising result, but Elizabeth's grasp of the material and her chemical connectivity to Tobey Maguire, in addition to her striking, athletic appearance, had us in a place where we were fully confident and ready to take the leap of giving the role of Jordan Baker to what, I guess, people would term 'a discovery'... We are thrilled."

Baker joins the ensemble cast, which in addition to Maguire also features Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Gatsby's forelorn love Daisy Buchanan. While Ben Affleck recently left the production and his role as Daisy's philandering husband Tom Buchanan, they are actively searching for his replacement and are in talks with Isla Fisher to play Tom's mistress, Myrtle.

I'm probably a bit biased because I read this book and absolutely hated it, but I don't remember anything from that book screaming at me that it needs to be a 3D movie.  I'm fine with having a movie based off the book (and if they can make it a good movie all the more power to them) but I seriously don't get why it needs to be 3D.

She looks a lot like Rashida Jones, but white. I'm envisioning this movie to be heavily stylized and don't see how 3D willl add much of anything, if not be a wasted distraction. I really enjoyed this book in high school and am hopeful for a good adaptation. I had to watch a horribly acted and cheesy reenactment in school and would really like to get that imagery outta my head

I still don't get the 3D think.  Will the art house crowd, who are the normal audience for this kind of movie, really be tempted to not only set foot in the suburban multiplex, but also shell-out $13+ for a 3D IMAX version?  I mean, a 3D Harry Potter or Transformers or any superhero movie I get, but not this kind of movie.  Somewhere Woody Allen has got to be scatching his head trying to puzzel this all out.  I know i am.
