Looks Like Francis Lawrence Will Be Directing 'Catching Fire'

I don't know if you guys heard, but they actually made a movie based on the first book in Suzanne Collins' young adult novel series 'The Hunger Games.' Rumor has it that it made a crap-ton of money to boot. Oh you did hear? Great! With all that green rolling in, it was a sure bet that we'd be getting a movie based on the next book in the series, 'Catching Fire,' but two weeks ago, 'Hunger Games' director Gary Ross declined to helm the second installment. The hunt was on for someone else to take the reigns, and now it looks like the battle royale for the director's chair has concluded and the winner appears to be Francis Lawrence ('I Am Legend,' 'Constantine'). The grueling search was narrowed down to Lawrence and Bennet Miller ('Moneyball'), but sources say Lionsgate will make an official offer to Lawrence. 'Catching Fire' is set to be released November 22 of 2013, and shooting needs to be completed by early January so that star Jennifer Lawrence can also make time to shoot the 'X-Men: First Class' sequel.

Not to get too swept up in blogger fervor, but I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment that circulated the web after Ross departed the project that it would have been nice to see a woman direct 'Catching Fire.' Katniss Everdeen is a fantastic female character and it would have been interesting to see her cinematic evolution fostered by a female director. That being said, I also would have been happy with Bennet Miller behind the camera; 'Moneyball' was an excellent piece of cinema. Why they went with Lawrence once they narrowed it down to two possibilites is beyond me. Perhaps I'm being short-sighted, but I don't see anything in his catalog that makes me think he's right for this film. Sure, he's handled big studio sci-fi before, but 'The Hunger Games' worked for me because it actually took the time to develop the characters before throwing them into the action fray. Lawrence may understand flash, but Miller knows how to dig deep into characters. The only thing I can fathom is that maybe Lawrence is a director who's proven he can work fast, which they need to do in order to get shooting wrapped by early January.

What do you guys think? Is Francis Lawrence the right choice? Who would you have chosen?

Bradley Cooper came back from the future to direct?

I actually thought he did pretty well filming Constantine and I Am Legend (more so I Am Legend). I thought he showed some development from one to the other. Hope he sticks with more practical effects this time around, though.

If he uses a tripod then I'm okay

I'm actually a big fan of Lawrence, I think he just never had the right script to go with talent.

If this guy can do better than Bourne action scenes, I'll be happy with that aspect. Also, put some money into a tripod or steadycam rig, for Science's sake.

At least this guy might be able to somewhat direct an action scene unlike Ross.
