So we've talked about it, we've joked about it, but we still have no concrete confirmation as to who the main villain will be in Shane Black's 'Iron Man 3.' We do know that Sir Ben Kingsley will be inhabiting whichever antagonist is selected, and the prevailing theory is that he will be playing Mandarin. The studio has kept quite mum on this controversy, but when word got out that Warren Ellis' 'Extremis' storyline would be the basis for the script, the Mandarin theory seemed to earn a bit more legitimacy. Now two separate sources are claiming to have uncovered proof that it will indeed be Mandarin who faces off with Tony Stark in the third installment of the franchise next year.
First, from Comic Book.com...
"While talking to some Wilmington locals, we had one source involved with the production tell us that Mandarin was definitely the villain. He said Mandarin had a set of twins that did most of his dirty work for him. Another source who had visited EUE/Screen Gems Studios told us that the sets they were building included Chinese storefronts."
And from Latino Review...
"Here’s what we can CONFIRM as true (and not from some guy working security on an off-lot shoot): The Mandarin (as played by Ben Kingsley) is a villain in the ‘Iron Man 3,’ but he’s more a veiled threat as a silent partner to Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian. Killian is the man inventing Extremis and putting it into his “Extremis army” of multiple super-powered individuals."
The Latino Review guys seem far more certain about their intel, but we're still not dealing in absolutes here. I like the idea of Mandarin, again if that is indeed who Kingsley will be portraying, being a sort of background puppet master and letting Guy Pearce be the chief villain. I only hope Firepower and Savin, who were added to the cast roster recently, don't overshadow him. Though given the dearth of diehard fans for those obscure characters, I'm not sure that's a valid concern. Once again, I'm not all at suggesting that either of these assertions about Mandarin should be accepted as gospel. However, at this time it's the most evidence we have to go on so it's worth at least discussing.
And that is where you come in, faithful Spillios! Give us your thoughts on this matter.

Comment by Kamron Rucker on June 4, 2012 at 2:03pm I always envisioned The Mandarin the Iron Man universe as a Chinese businessman who uses a satellite system legitimately sent up, but is secretly a system of ten circular satellites which can do various nefarious things (similar to HARP or orbital missile platforms but more advanced). It'd also be the perfect opportunity to touch on China and the Middle East catching up to us thanks to the recession and our seeming embracing of anti-intellectualism. And he'd be called The Mandarin simply because he speaks Mandarin and no one knows his actual name (legitimate businessman on the exterior, shadowy man controlling The Ten Rings organization behind the curtain with several competent yet disposable proxies 'leading' it). I honestly thought that'd be the best way to utilize a character who's prominent but would be haphazardly crammed into the IM franchise the way he was presented in the comics.
Comment by Combat Marshmallow on June 2, 2012 at 4:05pm I love Ben Kingsley! I'm all for this. :D
Comment by Boatloads1017 on June 2, 2012 at 12:28am We all knew it. Now we just have to see how it turns out on screen.
Comment by Santos on June 1, 2012 at 10:39am The first half of Tropic Thunder is very hard to sit through. I don't care if the movie is making fun of the holier that though attitudes of a lot of film stars. I couldn't stand the majority of those assholes and couldn't care less what happened to them. The movie eventually finds it feet, but it's such a chore to get to that point.
Comment by G The Destroyer on May 31, 2012 at 11:52am Extremis army of multiple super-powered individuals you say? sounds awesome!
Comment by Ironway 101 on May 31, 2012 at 9:33am Hendrix STFU! you dont know shit!!.....bitch! Im part chinese.. AND I APPROVE Ben KING!sly to portray the Mandarin.
Comment by I Be Gorson on May 31, 2012 at 8:50am It's pretty obvious Kingsley won't be playing the mandarin as chinese, and Indians are considered asian. This argument that in the comics it was different is crap, every comic book movie has changed the details to make it on screen, from Blade to the Avengers, and for the people who think it's a racist move should ask themselves why Nick Fury is black. If you wanna be mad about something there are a million things more important than Iron Man 3.
I don't know much about The Mandarin....just tell us one way or the other, please?????
