Live-Action 'Akira' Remake Greenlit...Again

In one of the stranger on-again/off-again stories in Hollywood, it has been reported that the live-action American remake of Japanese anime film 'Akira' has officially been given the green light by Warner Brothers. The film, now under the direction of 'Unknown' director Jaume Collet-Serra, has been slated to begin filming in late Feburary/early March of next year. So after a weird silence, changes in the budget, and changes in personnel, it looks like this thing is really happening. And apparently, the studio is set on casting 'Tron: Legacy's Garrett Hedlund in the lead role though no official deal has yet been made.

I still cannot understand why Warner Brothers, or any studio for that matter, is so keen on doing a live-action remake of 'Akira.' First, I don't know how they are going to be able to digitally recreate all the visually-arresting effects and action sequences without the film costing far more than its $90 million. And also, I just can't conceive of the impetus to repackage this film for wider American audiences. Those who are already fans of 'Akira' are not in favor of an American live-action remake, and those who have no idea what 'Akira' is are going to be a tough sell. I am also not at all sold on Garrett Hedlund both in this role or as an actor in general.

Would you guys have any interest in the new 'Akira?' Are you fans of the original?

That's some bullshit. they need to stop doing these live-action remakes of anime, case in point FIST OF THE NORTHSTAR. Eventhough that one was ok, the characters weren't supposed to be Japanese. But in the case of AKIRA it takes place in JAPAN! Why the fuck call it AKIRA if you're gonna cast a bunch of white people? Hollywood is fuckin run by retards!

Wow. I was thinking about making a facetious comment about "butthurt" but that would be meaningless. Instead, I'd like to point people towards a heated discussion on this matter  which brings up some very pertinent points that I think a lot of fans have not considered: http://twitchfilm.com/news/2011/10/on-why-crying-about-remakes-is-a...

BTW, @John Lambo, if that was a real poster, people would likely be lining up to watch the fuck out of it, and the aforementioned article poses some excellent points as to why that would not be a bad thing at all.

It will fail because they are over estimating it's popularity. It happend with Watchmen. this won't be any different.

I can't see this being all that marketable to the general public without some serious changes or lies in the trailer. (they never do that) If it ends up being reviewed as good I'd rent it, however I can't see myself going to a theatre for this.

@Robo-Blue-Wrench: Of the three you mentioned, Dark City is by far my favorite in both scope and story. The Matrix was more about effects than acting (ouch...), and Inception was well-written, but visually bland (A curling city-scape is cool, but these are fucking DREAMS people....).

Just because its not based in Japan doesn't mean they can't still use asian actors, fucking hate when they do this. Anyone remember when Keanu Reeves was considered for Kaneda?
