Lionsgate Putting Together A Found-Footage Frankenstein?

During SxSW, an anthology horror film screened as part of the Midnight slate. It was called 'V/H/S' and it was a patchwork of several miniature found-footage films each made by rising talents in the industry. You can hear the Spill Crew review it here. One such segment, easily my favorite of the whole bunch, was a haunted house story created by a group calling themselves Radio Silence. Well, it looks as if Radio Silence isn't through with this storytelling medium just yet. They are currently in negotiations with Lionsgate to direct 'Reawakening,' a found-footage take on the Frankenstein mythology. Few additional details are known at this time other than that the script for 'Reawakening' was penned by Luke Dawson ('Shutter').

I am quite conflicted here. On the one hand, yes, Radio Silence has shown me that they are quality horror filmmakers and they did manage to do something creative even within the already tiresome subgenre. However, I am really getting sick of found-footage. Plus, as the original news source points out, there are a great many Frankenstein projects on the horizon including 'I, Frankenstein,' and upcoming films from both Fox and Universal. I'm not at all saying that I immediately think 'Reawakening' will be bad based on its premise, but it is going to face an uphill battle. To make any sort of reasonable sense, 'Reawakening' will have to be a more modernized version of the Frankenstein tale, I don't see the silent, hand-cranked camera incarnation of found-footage working too well. Based on the good will they've engendered in me from 'V/H/S,' I'm willing to at least give the film a shot should Lionsgate pick it up...which honestly they would be crazy not to considering the investment-to-return ratio on found-footage these days.

What do you guys think? Could this concept work?

Everything today goes in cycles. Magic, superheroes, vampires, found footage...hells, got a zombie film coming which is a FUCKING LOVE STORY ALA TWILIGHT!!!! Seriously, it's Twilight but with the male lead being a sparkling zombie with perfect skin instead of being a vampire.

The real question is can they do a good job. Considering the source material and the modern era take, I could really see it as someone taking vlogs of their experiments and what will eventually go wrong. If done right, it could be ok...if not...well, then we get another Paranormal Activity.

Found footage movie have long since worn out they're welcome for me. But they're so cheap to make, the public would  have to totally turn against for them to stop being profitable and put an end to the glut.

The FUCK is up with all these Frankenstein Movies? Is like studios find out they are making one type of movie and follow suit with all the same type of movies

This sounds awesome to me! I am a found footage addict so I'm excited. I think this will be done in a modern day setting. I can picture the POV being a camera used by the Igor character to record his master's progress with his scientific experiemnets. Such a perspective can work because we can see the Monster as a frightening force, but perhaps we can see footage of him being sympathic character. Or they may just be using the name "Frankenstein" in a very loose sense. Picture how awesome a Re Animator story would be from a found footage perspective. I think there is greater possiblities here then we can think of currently.

Q: How would they even do this, even if they modernize it? Who's point of view would it be from? How would you portray the monster? How would you portray Frankenstein? How would you make us sympathize with both of them?

A: This whole idea just doesn't make any sense at all. There are no alternate points of views simply because the tale is meant to be told from both the monster and Frankenstein's points of views! We're meant to sympathize with both of them, and a found footage film would lose that sympathy and thus the film would ultimately fail!

Found footage films can't tell a story as complex as Frankenstein because it's a forced perspective-they can only work with simple premises (that can have some complex characters, if told through their point of view ala Chronicle). It just wouldn't work, especially since this is also another case of it's been done before and it was done better.

...no...just...no. There"s nothing to be conflicted about here. This idea sounds stupid and lazy coming from a team of shitty filmmamers simply looking at trends and numbers, REGARDLESS if the gimmick they lazily wanna slap on would make no fucking sense no matter how you try to spin it. "Oooo but they made some overrated movie that touched me in my special nostalgia place and called it VHS!" Spare me....and even then ya'll said that only one part was really worth while the rest was the same horror cliches that have been beaten to death for the past decade.

But since they're obviously going to make it for cheap and dump it in January where shit else is going on, guess you really can't blame em. For as much shit people talk about the PA movies, at least there's a semi sensible motive behind it and at the very least they wanna be fun haunted house type movies for the Halloween crowd. Shit like this or Apollo 18 gives a buncha hacks and their hack buddies an excuse to be cheap and lazy. Fuck this movie already...

I'm making a found footage film about the paint drying in my renovated house.  Spread the word everybody.
