Lionsgate Acquires Three IM Global Films

Source: Variety

Variety reports that Lionsgate Films has picked up US distribution rights to IM Global's Dredd, Safe and Protection.

The first to hit theaters will be Boaz Yakin's Safe, a crime thriller that is currently filming with Jason Statham. Produced by Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction), expect a 2011 release.

Dredd, the new take on 2000AD's beloved comic book character Judge Dredd, will begin production in South Africa on November 12th. The $45 million budgeted action flick stars Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby and will be released in 3D.

Protection will be directed by Simon West (Con Air) and stars Dwayne Johnson as a disgraced former American Special Forces operative who attempts to clear his name by rescuing a judge's kidnapped daughter from a Mexican cartel. Brandon Noonan wrote the screenplay.

The latter releases will likely hit theaters in 2012.

Dear Dr. Cyclopz,

Please do not worry your misspelled self about the Spill reaction to Dredd. Most of us are quite aware of the existence of the comic and know what the source material is. The rest are mouth-breathing idiots not worth your time.
What we ARE concerned about is Hollywood's history with both comic book characters AND this one in particular. Despite what some may see as acceptance at last in land of film of comics and serious attention to their stories and characters, Hollywood still tends toward parody and distain of the industry at large. At best, you have directors and writers that aren't fans or know much about the characters but try to mimic the comics as best they can...and at worse you have Joel Schumacker.
And for some of us, the pain that was Judge Dredd has yet to fade. So we look upon yet another re-boot in the Season of Reboots with trepidation...because we have been stung once too often. It will be Lionsgate's job to convince us otherwise.
And on a final note...am I the only one that noticed how goofy the comic is anyway? Good, but fucking GOOFY....

Hey these all sound good to me especially "Dredd" I like the first one i know it had alot of flaws , but im with mjtfreeze cant wait to hear "I AM THE LAW". Also looks like Dwayne Johnson got himself a new agent and doing the action thing again.

These three movies sound like they have some money behind them so I'm a little confused why a major distributor like Warners or Fox haven't picked them up, but that's not really important. I'm very excited to see Karl Urban as the new Judge Dredd!
