The Swedish Horror Film, Directed by Tomas Alfredson, is it Oscar worthy?
Now when I first heard Korey discussing with co-host about this movie it sparked my curiosity. Now honestly I’m mostly a fan of Spanish, Italian, French, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino, or Portuguese horror films, since besides the fact that I know the romance languages very well and that America has a bit of a habit trying to remake the eastern films, but the other fact is that I’ve loved the fact that they’ve become a bit better in the past years. Now I’ve never seen a Swedish or Slovak like film in my short life, but Let the Right One In, really did open my mind to other great eastern European films, like, Sunshine, Directed by István Szabó, Closely Observed Trains, Directed by Menzel, The Time of the Gypsies By Kusturic, and lastly, The Double Life of Veronique, Directed by Kieslowski.
Now each of these films are Oscar worthy in their own way, but the question is that I asked before, is the film Let the Right One Oscar worthy?
Quick Synopsis ( For those who do not know what the movie is yet )
It is an extremely well directed horror film that follows the traditional style of Guillermo del Toro's The Devil’s Backbone. This Swedish film Let the Right One In is certified to send anyone at least the slightest tingle or chill down their spine. A 12 year old outcast boy named Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant), who is constantly getting bullied, tested, and harassed by his fellow classmates always dreamed of revenge, but sadly doesn’t have enough guts to do it. Soon he has a mysterious new next door neighbor, 12 year old Eli (Lina Leandersson). They soon bond outside every night by the jungle gym, and soon Oskar begins to feel more for her than a friend, but as his love. Though Eli is far from an ordinary 12 year old girl, she has to stay out of the sun cause of her pale complexion, is extremely athletic for a child, being able to perform physical feats that no human can possibly do, and her diet revolves around blood. Though as more and more corpses are found through their town, Oskar refuses to stay away from the only person that has ever given him any sense of hope that he can stand up to those bullies. Based on the novel by John Ajvide Linqvist (who also was the one wrote the script) Let The Right One In, is what other critics say “The best kind of horror film: one that transcends the tropes of the genre to become something new”. Using and questioning Vampire lore ( Yes Carlyle the old school vampire lore ), comedy and drama that makes Oskar and Eli’s relationship adorably sweet.. that is until you remember she can snap his neck off within a second. Let the Right One In is truly a one in a million film, that is Oscar worthy in many ways. The music is amazing, composed by John Soderqvist, who composed perfect music to match the cold chilly Swedish suburbs which easily parallels Hoyte Van Hoytema’s choice of scenerary background making the environment beautiful beyond compare.
So in other words Let the Right One In is overall an amazing movie, and I recommend all of you members at spill to watch it.
Also be warned, once the movie is over, you will have an eerie feeling as you reminisce about the movie and add the pieces together.

Great review. I would love to see it win an Oscar but since a remake is coming. I can't see the Oscars giving this one the honor. If it does it will make me happy.
The book is fantastic and explains a great many things including the vampire's handler. Are you sure you're not related to the actress who plays the vampire in the film? She's adorable.
Thanks for posting this, I always wanted to see this movie but never did. I think I'll go buy the DvD and check it out, good review!

It is without a doubt award-worthy. This is movie utilizes every tool at its disposal to craft a sense of community, isolation, sincerity, and terror all at once.
