Sony is rebooting Spider-Man because they told Sam Raimi not to use The Lizard as the bad guy In Spider-Man 4 because they wanted a human bad guy so when Sam decided to use The Vulture Sony told Sam not to use him either because they thought he was not challenging and popular enough to fight Spider-Man and they'd have too many unsold Vulture toys on shelves when the movie was released in the movie theaters.
John Malkovich was going to play the Vulture and Anne Hathaway was going to play The Vulturess rather than The Black Cat.
Although Sam hired Alvin Sargent to write the script, he didn't like the idea of having Peter and Mary Jane getting married and having a baby girl, Spider-Man killing The Vulture and give up being Spider-Man and return as Spider-Man in the 5th movie so he decided not to make Spider-Man 4.

Sam wanted another villain, and Ben Kingsley was involved in negotiations to play The Vulture before the character was cut out of the movie. Producer Avi Arad convinced Sam to include Venom, a character whose perceived lack of humanity had initially been criticized by Sam. Avi told the Sam that Venom had a strong fan base, so he included the character to please them and even began to appreciate the character himself based on how well Alvin Sargent wrote him in the screenplay.
