Leon Reviews "METALOCALYPSE: Season 3" [Blu-ray]

Humans are creatures of adaptation. Given enough time or the right set of circumstances we will readjust our sensibilities we can make the most of any devastating loss, natural disaster, Holocaust or kidnapping and torture.

Perfect example:I had nothing but a dismissive disdain for death metal. But watching Metalocalypse I discovered that when it’s delivered to me as the soundtrack to a ridiculously epic music video at the end of a 15 minute animated cartoon suddenly I LOVE it!

By the time we get to its climaxes, the only thing higher than its level of bravado is its level of absurdity. Not just that it’s the ultimate rock ‘n roll fantasy that a death metal band is so popular that it generates enough income to be the world’s seventh largest economy and has a secret cabal known as the Tribunal plotting to bring them down. What’s more even absurd is that the band, Dethklok, shrugs off every shred of responsibility that should come from such stature and continue to lead an imaginatively hedonistic lifestyle. It’s only by the good graces of their abundantly efficient manager, Charles Foster Ofdensen, that the quintet of clueless rockers (Nathan Explosion, Toki, Pickles, Skwisgaar and Murderface) are prevented from going bankrupt and/or destroying the world.

The second season of Metalocalypse ending with The Revengecers, an anti-Dethklok terrorist group, launching their most devastating attack on Dethklok yet by raising an army of brainwashed Dethklok fans and attacking their fortress/recording compound directly with a secret weapon. The heroics of each band member are displayed as they survive the attack and win the battle, but Ofdensen is left gravely injured.

Season 3 opens with "Renovation Klok"
In the wake of the unsuccessful siege Dethklok is without a manager and the whole thing is going to hell faster than any handbasket could ever hope to take them. Left without a Ofdensen, Dethklok are forced to become their own managers. Not surprsingly they mismanage their finances with ungodly expenditures on renovating their compound and planning their biggest concert ever. Meanwhile, a change in management at their record label threatens to cut off the band's finances for revenge.

"Tributeklok"
Dethklok joins their own Dethklok tribute band as a last ditch effort to connect with their rock and roll roots.
Deth Health After a near-death experience, Dethklok realizes they would rather be sick and not know then face the brutality of going to a doctor . After home remedies including drinking bleach, Dethklok learns that their ultimate fear will be realized, one of them has a terminal illness. Meanwhile Nathan tries to brave the brutality of going to the dentist and Murderface faces the possibility of being gay after accidentally ejaculating on a doctors face.

"Dethmas"
Dethklok must experience the ultimate brutality of the Holiday season; spending time with their MOTHERS. Meanwhile Murderface ringleads the ultimate Christmas special that ends up being backed by the Christian church. And a particular ROCK AND ROLL clown makes a holiday appearance. 45

"Fertilityklok"
Toki falls head over heals for a girl he meets online. When things sour he tries to break it off and instead has to bear the brutality of being her date at her father's vegan funeral in 110 degree heat. Meanwhile Nathan experiences the brutality of dating a performance artist. And Murderface must attend a sexual harassment seminar after trying to match Skwisgaar's sexual prowess.

"Dethsiduals"
Murderface wants the easy life but still wants all the rewards. After the band decides to kick him out for making their jobs more difficult, Murderface realizes the EASIEST way to make BIG money is to start his own label to reap the all the "back end profits." He immediately signs a band of heroin thugs that torture him, create more work than he's ever done, and ruin his once easy life.

"Fatherklok"
After an onslaught of paternity suits, Skwisgaar realizes he will never change until he quits the band to find his father who abandoned him before birth. Meanwhile, Dethklok realizes they all have father abandonment issues and Murderface decides to repair the damages by appointing himself "Band Father."

"Rehabklok"
After Drunk driving HOVER DRUMS and causing billions in damage Pickles the drummer is thrown into rehab and his worst nightmares are realized when he is replaced- by a drum machine.
"Dethzazz"
Toki tries to turn the life of his rock-and-roll clown friend, Dr. Rockzo, around by investing Dethklok's vacation fund into the ultimate Zazz Blammymatazz reunion. Everything goes smoothly until the media peers into Rockzo's past and discovers the clown's darkest secret, the secret that tore his career apart, the secret love of a girl he couldn't have. Rockzo disappears from the public. When we learn that Toki CAN'T live without the clown, he recedes into a state of dark catatonia and Dethklok realizes that in order to save their bandmate Toki, they must save the clown.

"Doublebookedklok"
While Dethklok's manager, Charles Offdensen, is absent cleaning up hundreds of problems caused by the band, Dethklok double books a gig--between Syria and Israel on the same day. The band acts out and Salacia and the TRIBUNAL ask why Offdensen faked his death.

A much bigger change for Metalocalypse in its third season is that the shows went from 15 minute half cartoons to full 30 minute shows (actual running time 21 minutes, minus commercials). A risky move considering that show was working perfectly on a formula gory Three Stooges-type antics ending with an even gorier concert video. There were times when it would feel like not enough but it was a great alternative to for feeling to long and padded. Always leave the audience wanting more.

Surprsingly, these new half episodes don’t wear out their welcome at all. The stories are more centered on further exploring the individual the characters as well as the more of one my all-time favorite animated characters, “Dr. Rockzo”, the rock ‘n roll clown.

Dude, Metalocalypse was pretty good this past season, but for some reason, I got extremely sick of Murderface, to the point I was hoping that they turned him into the Kenny of the show.

I've heard of this show, and it is usually on when I go to sleep. Also I'm not a big fan of Heavy Metal Rock. I'll give it a try and who knows, maybe it will be one of those pleasent surprises.

I second what Fungusmonkey said. Nice review Leon.

My favorite episode is the one with Kirk Hammett of Metallica as Toki's Date

Next season better have Dave Mustaine

At this point, I shouldn't have to say that I'm a fan of the show, but DAMN I LOVE THIS SHOW!

Besides creator Brendon Small being a brilliant dialog writer (no one writes overlapping dialog better IMHO) and absurdly funny comedian, he is a GENIUS musician. Even if the show was crap, I'd still be buying the albums because the music has layers and layers of subtlety underscoring some of the best metal music I've heard in years. Then you take that amazing music and wrap it around some supremely entertaining ultra-violence? SOLD. The only thing better is that the show actually has a developing backstory and mythos behind the band (and the shadowy organization keeping tabs on them) so that not only is each episode entertaining in it's own right, the show as a whole rewards the viewer who keeps up with it.

I really fell in love with this show in Season 2 and this season escalated it to the umpteenth degree. My favorite episode was hands down Dethzazz, especially the ending.

Oh I need to pick this up. I wasn't able to keep track of this season but I'm so glad to hear that we get even more Dr. Rockzo this time around!
