The LEOG crew, along with critics Peter Hall and 'cast regular Brian Salisbury, take a look at the nominations this year and give their own, sometimes rather caustic, opinions. Just more vitriol for you all to love...

Comment by Joobless on February 8, 2011 at 6:59pm Bloody hell that was a close call for the Black Swan spoiler O.o Managed to close the tab down in time, thanks for the heads up.
Why is it that I have to wait until March for that movie to come out in theaters? I had to wait until October for Scott Pilgrim, why is the distribution broken?! :(
Comment by FearlessVampireKiller on February 8, 2011 at 6:32pm Didn't "Con Air" come out the same year as Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare in Love?
In that case, I call Bullshit on either of those films even being considered for the Oscar!
@James Wow,thanks. I'd forgotten all that from the 2nd half of FMJ...which was sort my point.
It and Private Ryan are both good movies, but their back ends are way overshadowed by their fronts.
And to echo Cyrus, if Saving Private Ryan had won Best Picture I would not have yelled "Bullshit!!"

It's been a while since I've seen Full Metal Jacket, but off the top of my head from the second part I remember: the shot of all those chalked corpses and a commander complaining to Joker about the peace symbol on his helmet (the 'Jungian' thing) and the climax when the sniper is revealed.
I don't disagree that the second half doesn't have as much momentum as the first half, but it's still significant. The ending shows how Joker has become the very thing Hartman set out to create, and thus he's lost all sense of innocence, humanity etc. and heads out into the strange world that is the landscape of war.
