Fun game the first time I played it, but even I will admit that the game as a whole felt kinda empty. The realistic recreation of 1940's LA was really pretty to look at, but I spent the whole game driving around in it in really slow cars from mission to mission. More often than not I would drive for miles in the opposite direction to go deal with street crimes just to break up the tedium. The story might have been more engaging if I got any sense that Cole was anything other than a character cypher or if I felt anything for the victims. On the whole, I think that this was a good experiment that ultimately failed because it wasn't linear enough to justify the story structure and shoddy pacing, but it wasn't open enough to immerse you and force you to explore more of the world or little events in the background. Not a terrible game, but not worth a purchase on the whole. Maybe a rental. That's it.

All the positive things about it has nothing to do with the game play.  I went into expecting to get a Carmen San Diego type game where I would have to solve cases, collect evidence, and try to put the guilty party behind bars.  It holds your hand so tightly the entire time it cut the circulation to my hand.  There are no consequences to anything you do unless you get into a fight or a shot out.  They are so few and far between they might as well not be there.

If you must play then rent it.  Better than that borrow it from some chump who bought it.

In my opinion this game had a great balance of action, investigation and interogation. This wasn't a game like GTA, where every single situation turns into an unrealistic gun battle, in which your character wouldn't survive in a realistic world, this made the action feel intense whenever it did happen. another thing I liked was that before one desk got boring, it switches you on to another one.

The only bad points for me was on occasions, I couldn't help but yawn (literally yawn). Not to say it's boring, but it was rather slow paced, say with the excessive driving (which you didn't need to do). I also couldn't get the hang of the whole "Truth, Doubt, Lie" system at first (I had to read up on it), the very first person I interviewed was a harmless little lady who had just seen her boss murdered, on asking questions, I quickly, and unwillingly accused her of murder, she was not amused.

I also wish they had added online multiplayer features, the combat and driving systems seemed sound, more-so than in Red Dead or GTA 4, and it would have added more of a replayability factor, because I have just finished it now, and I feel no need to play it again.

If I remember right, the missing desks were Bunco (conmen, fraud, etc) and Burglary.

Sorry Nick, but you've been biased to this from the start, i can't take your review with credit.

I'll likely go with the consensus and rent this.

Wow. I'm surprised to hear all of the mixed responses from the comments, I'm enjoying the story, the characters, and just about everything there is to the game. I could care less that there aren't completely black and white GOOD COP BAD COP decisions, that type of thing is so tiring in some games. It's completely fine that they went for a straightforward story with characters who acted certain ways, I really liked the main character. I'm not even a huge Rockstar fan, but this is one of the most engrossing games that I've played in a long time.

And really? People are saying the game will be forgettable? Pfff.. Maybe for you. GTA and RDR are both great, and LAN holds up to both of them easily.

Glad you guys are delivering harsher criticism then other gaming critics, because a lot of them are just sucking Rockstar's dick. Glad to hear it's still a great game despite the shortcomings.

my dad has a ps3, and i have an xbox, we both have gta and red dead redemption...he just recently got this game but we havent tried it yet. but theres 1 thing i know for sure, i highly doubt that i will like it AS MUCH as red dead redemption. that game just felt complete and only flawed w/ its freezing problems.

but im sure im gonna totally love this game. and I was hoping the score would be as good as red dead...and then when i heard that jazz-score at 12:20...WOW. that kind of jazz is seriously beautiful. it just feels so raw and has so much emotion...and to know a video game (by Rockstar!!!) uses that kind of music, is just incredible.
