Synopsis:
Slacker cop Jeong-min (Kim dong-wuk) is assigned to track the culprit behind a recent string of murders, but with public outcry against the overall level of incompetency in the police force, a reward is offered to anyone who can help bring in the killer. Yeong-seok (Yoo Oh-seong) is unemployed and depressed that he can't offer his daughter the life he promised her, but hopes to use his natural police instincts to claim the reward.
Story Revu:
The more I think about it, the more 'Happy Killers,' seems like an almost direct parody of 'The Chaser.' The public outcry against the incompetent police force is a major aspect of the film. As a comic take on the serial killer film, which has become one of the most prevalent types of Korean film lately, 'Happy Killers' really is a nice change of pace. It's often quite funny, and tries to tell an involving story, even though it doesn't end up quite as memorable as the genre it mocks. As some one that writes and devours alot of humor, I find many Asian comedies far to broad to really appreciate, and while Happy Killers does fall victim to the genre, there are also some genuine subtle laughs throughout. You have the broad comedy of Yeong-seok dressing as a woman so the killer will target him, but you also have some subtle farce with his daughter suspecting him of being the murderer, and then there's fugly gang that wants her to be their 'face' so they can attract some sausage, and Kim Dong-Wuk's complete inability to do anything right... there's enough farcical situations and moments of pure levity that the film will keep you entertained throughout, even when it gets a little heavy. These moments of emotion is really the biggest weakness of the film, because subtracts from the comic mood the rest of the film has. It's no madcap comedy, but it's a fun entertaining film that's worth the watch.
Action Revu:
None to speak of really
Overall:
Happy Killers does a great job of entertaining, and while I doubt anyone will ever consider it a modern Korean classic, it's a fun bit of distraction, with some lasting comic moments.
