Kung-Fu Revu 148: Heroic Trio (1993)

Synopsis:

Invisible woman Ching (Michelle Yeoh) is kidnapping newborn babies for her immortal evil emperor master. Tung (Anita Mui) is a superhero who aims to stop her when her police officer husband cannot. Finally Mercy (short for mercenary) (Maggie Cheung) is a gun-toting hard-boiled bounty hunter employed to rescue one of the kidnapped infants.

Story Revu:

This movie is goddamned ridiculous. Let's start with the distance between the crazy quality of the talent involved with the terrible quality of the movie. The film stars the three biggest Chinese actresses at the time: Maggie Cheung, known from her many roles as Jackie Chan's love interest (Police Story, Project A); the late Anita Mui, also know for her comic roles in Jackie Chan movies (Rumble in the Bronx, Drunken Master 2); and Michelle Yeoh, known for her role in kicking all of the asses. It also includes Anthony Wong, China's answer to Paul Giamatti, and is directed by Johnnie fucking To, who's received somewhere in the vicinity of a million awards for films like Election, and Exiled. And yet, somehow, they all got together and decided to make this nonsense. Now, Maggie Cheung I understand, as time passes I become less and less enchanted with her looks and more and more aware that she's a terrible actress. But the others? They know better. There isn't a single thing about this movie that isn't over-the-top campy. Now, it *is* so over-the-top that it has "cult classic" written all over it. But to appeal to the my cult adoration film gene, a film can't just be ridiculous, it has to also be kinda awesome. Like the Crank films. Those are the perfect example. Laughable ridiculous, clearly comedies, but still all kinds of awesome. This definitely evoked a bit of Sam Raimi... in ways reminding me of both Darkman and Evil Dead... but I'm unconvinced that any of it was intentional. The plot is absolutely ridiculous, the acting is terrible... and there is really nothing I can say to justify it.

Action Revu:

Over the top. Heavily wired... and it's not just silly... it's conceptually silly.

Overall:

Right along the lines of sublimely bad... but never into the realm of intentionally sublimely bad. Should be viewed for riffing opportunities only... and actually also Michelle Yeoh's wardrobe, yeow.

1/5 Stars
