Synopsis:
"Fish Story" centers around a rock band from 1974 who decide to break up having had no success, they record one last song before the band splits. Decades later that song will have a profound effect on peoples lives, eventually becoming the savior of the world.
Story Revu:
A year before the Sex Pistols come along and change the face of music, a Japanese punk band named Gekirin cuts their first and only record. No one has heard this sound before, and the record simply doesn't sell... except for a few superstitious folks who think the one minute long gap of silence in the middle of the title track "Fish Story" is meant to cover up the scream of a dying woman. The story opens in 2012, just five hours before a comet will hit and destroy the world. In your face Nostradamus, Mayan apocalypse prophecy for the win! The non-linear story shows us the tribulations of a small band unappreciated in their time and how their rare little song goes on to save the world. The story has a great message about the importance of art, and it's ability to affect people and events, even if it doesn't sell. The non-linear storyline is absolutely fantastic, we see a bunch of short stories basically some seem related to the song, and some not, that all eventually are tied together in a way that doesn't feel false at all. At first I spent a good deal of my time trying to figure out what was going on, and how the song affected things that happened, or how they were tied together, but as the movie progressed I just sat back and enjoyed the film at face value, which I think is why I enjoyed the ending as much as I did. My only real caveat is that I thought a decent chunk of the acting was pretty bad. Mikako Tabe's schoolgirl character misses her stop on a ferry and is stuck. She cries about it like how an alien would program a robot to cry. It's just awful awful acting.
Action Revu:
Surprisingly, there's a little action scene in the middle here. It's silly but fun
Overall:
It's not really a perfect film, but it is a great film. It tells it's story in an engaging way and it has an indirect message that I always appreciate. It's a bit slow sometimes, and the acting can be spotty, but the movie is both a lot of fun, and has a statement to make.
