In the ongoing casting rumor machine that is the American 'Akira' remake, today one more name gets added into the mix. 'Twilight's Kristen Stewart has apparently been offered the role of Kei, the female lead of the film. If the other rumors are to be believed, this means that Stewart will be playing opposite Garret Hedlund who has been sought for the role of Kaneda. Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter have also been offered roles. Stewart has developed a pretty expansive fan base portraying Bella in the 'Twilight' franchise; the latest of which opens in theaters this Friday.
As much as I want to make fun of Stewart for the 'Twilight' series, because it is just plain awful, I honestly believe she's a good actress. Bella may be an emotionally crippled doorknob, but Stewart turned in fantastic performances in 'The Runaways' and 'Adventureland' so clearly she is talented. I don't think she's necessarily the best person for the role, but that seems to be the trend with this remake as it is. Garret Hedlund could not be a worse choice for Kaneda in my opinion. Stewart's dance card seems to be filling up quickly. She still has the second half of the final installment of 'Twilight,' she'll be appearing in the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road,' and, if the trailer is to be believed, she has a badass war to wage with The Queen in 'Snow White and the Hunstman.'
I know this 'Akira' remake has caused some ire with fans, what's your reaction to this bit of casting?

Comment by Soulredeemer92 on November 24, 2011 at 1:48am you know i might be a lil happy if kristen steward played kaori that way she gets killed in the end bwahahaha. but in all seriousness she should not be the female lead in this prehaps natalie portman or keira knightley would be much suitable as for the role of kaneda i think garret hedlund seems to fit the role but we'll see

tl;dr- Don't call it Akira, go for "R" rating, don't try to mimic the visual style of the original, and make the main characters black or Latino, because as sad as it is, in America it is far more likely for minorities to be stuck in poverty-stricken urban areas, and a bunch of white actors will feel really out of place. If they do this, they could actually comment on some of the societal flaws in America, and that'd be very interesting.
This isn't gonna happen, of course.

Comment by John Lemus on November 18, 2011 at 12:29pm I agree with TheLegend2174 and I too hope you are being very sarcastic
I liked Dragon Ball Evolution and has hoping for a sequel but Speed Racer I thought sucked but could have been worse.

Comment by Angele Green on November 18, 2011 at 3:28am I want an all asian cast.
Hollywood is just screwing up the Japanese stories.
Just stick to Resident Evil and Tomb Raider where it is originally non-asian characters and shooting of guns.
