Alright I'm just gonna be blunt here I'm not someone who buys into a lot of the hype for movies especially comic book superhero movies because I know if I let myself buy into the hype then the movie will most likely be shit. But when I saw previews of Kick Ass I couldn't help but buy into the hype I mean it was a Mark Millar adaptation that seemed faithful to the source material unlike the movie Wanted where they just took a huge shit on the source material and called it a movie.
Now I should warn people that this review does have spoilers so if you haven't seen the movie yet then I suggest you do so then come back and read this review that is if you really give a shit about what I think about it. I also should note that no I have not read the comic that this was based on because well I'm kindda lazy and I'm not gonna wait two to four weeks till Amazon.com ships it.
Also one last thing I'm not gonna bother recaping the plot of this movie because chances are you already know what this movie is about.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE MOVIE
The character of Hit-Girl I mean c'mon she pretty much stole every scene she was in and plus the actress that played her Chloe Moretz knew how to act which for me is a first because most movies nowadays that have child actors are crap and most of the time the kids don't know how to act for shit.

Nick Cage was GOOD yeah that's right I said it I'm one of those people that has talked shit about him over the years and I'm really surprised that he turned in a good performance for once at least I can look back now and say hey he was in one movie I liked.
The action was really well done I do have gripes when it comes to superhero movies and action like sometimes it can seem a little too unrealistic but here I think Matthew Vaughn did a great job with the action it wasn't too over the top like the comic and it wasn't too fast and filled with shaky camera work like Michael Bay's bullshit movies.
I also thought that the costumes were pretty cool I mean it's nice to see someone in these movies dress up like a cosplayer and not a real superhero it helps the movie keep it's colorful comic book feel and yes I'm glad to see a superhero movie that isn't dark and gritty.
I like the fact that they didn't go all over the top with the violence I know that the comic had a lot of over the top gore in it and I'm glad they didn't do that in the movie because I'm sorry I just don't think gore works for superhero movies which is why I was pissed when they added it to Watchmen but that's another story.
WHAT I HATED ABOUT THE MOVIE
Red Mist was underused I felt that they could have done a lot more with his character like maybe make him a rival for Kick Ass or maybe have him be really evil because I really got the feeling that they kept switching between someone who's not all bad and someone who's a jerk. I mean he did feel sorry for getting Kick Ass captured towards the end of the movie but then in the climax I felt the writers just said fuck it and make him a bad guy which I though was kidda stupid.

The jokes were not all that funny I just felt that they could have made fun of a lot of comic book cliches like always wearing a mask to hide your identity or the fact that no one could tell it was Dave who was Kick Ass because he didn't wear his glasses like Clark Kent or something. This is only a minor gripe but still a lot of missed jokes kind of hurt the movie a little bit.
Mark Strong was REALLY underused I felt that he really didn't get to do much until the end of the movie I mean he's a great actor and all but he just doesn't have a lot to do in this movie until the very end so that was something that I didn't like about the movie. I mean you would think him being the villain and all like he'd get more screen time but sadly no plus yeah he was a little bit of a cliche.

But the main thing I didn't like about this movie is of course the jetpack at the end I mean wow what the fuck man? I mean did the writers just run out of ideas and say fuck it let's have Kick Ass come in with a jetpack and shoot everybody I mean this really kills the realistic feel the movie was going for I mean seriously a jet pack with two gatling guns? I mean what the fuck Dave is now War Machine or something? I guess they figured that they had to use the effects money on something. I mean seriously a jetpack with two gatling guns....just wow.
FINAL VERDICT
Despite the fact that the movie does have it's problems after all what movie today doesn't it's still pretty fun and enjoyable plus it's nice to see a comic book movie that doesn't take itself seriously and isn't all dark and gritty and is just fun. Now this movie is not for everybody and if you don't like it that's fine but don't be act like a fucking asshole about it I mean don't complain about Hit Girl using profanity or that it's too violent or it's not like the comic I mean just stop with all that shit and let those of us who like the movie enjoy talking about it.
