First the horrendous Wonder Woman pilot gets canned, and now this? While most of the world revolted when news hit that Keanu Reeves was being pursued for the role of gang leader Kaneda in the forthcoming US adaptation of 'Akira', new reports say that the actor and his representatives have passed on the role, and that negotiations have stopped entirely. You hear that? If you listen closely, you can hear the sound of angels singing.

Reeves joins Brad Pitt, James Franco, and Ryan Gosling as actors with enough sense to turn down the role, but it seems that the oxymoronic "shortlist" of actors is actually quite long, and Warner Bros. Pictures is continuing to go down it until they find their leading man. While there have been rumors of the 'Akira' pre-viz team stopping work and employees being let go, Warner Bros. is quick to dismiss them:

"Production on ‘Akira’ has not halted or been shut down, as the film has not yet been greenlit and is still very much in the development stage. The exploratory process is crucial to a project of this magnitude, and we will continue to sculpt our approach to making the best possible film."

WB is obsessed w/ fucking up this project.  Some films just can't be re-made, specically if the company is trying to find a star that is bankable instead of right for the role.

@KingpinLarry There has only been ONE Cowboy Beebop film, Knocking on Heaven's Door

And this is just a bad idea, alot of things in Akira are very Japanese oriented(the explosion in Tokyo is reminiscent of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, and the bikes were from Japanese bike gangs which were on the rise at the time etc).  Luckily Keanu passed, the budget to bring something like Akira to life just doesn't seem to be worth it, with similar geek movies bombing, and with the budget that this will likely have(that or half-ass it), then this is far too risky a project, especially given that it's an R rated story originally, and something of this kind would be turned into a PG13 affair.   Any sane actor/actress would stay far far away....

@Grimmjow666 Cowboy Bebop has 2 anime film, but I've only seen the first. Though I can see Reeves as Spike, I'd much rather have the show back or new movie with all of the original actors.

There's a reason Japanese movies are made in Japan.

Yeah I agree

I don't even think it would work as a CG release like Voltron and Thundercats

Voltron does look awesome

HONESTLY...i hope they cancel the film completely. I rather look at Akira as a classic, and not possibly a "yea I love the original until they tried to remake it and failed" kind of thing.

He did not do it because it would have brought forward the Raptue

It was suppose to happen today at 6
