After reading comments on the Spill blog announcing Keanu Reeves to play Spike Spiegel in the upcoming Cowboy Bebop film from 20th Century Fox (ugh why Fox) I have to settle something with my fellow spilldos on the choice of Keanu Reeves in the role of Spike Spiegel.
Anybody who has watched the original Cowboy Bebop series knows that Spike is as cool as the come. He has style, personality plus he can kick ass. Now many of the naysayers would argue that Keanu Reeves is a lifeless actor who would fail to bring justice the style and awesomeness that embodies Spike but I for one beg to differ.
As Keanu Reeves is one of my favourite action stars I believe that if the film is in the right hands he is perfectly capable of capturing Spike and all of his nuances.
Exhibit A:
Speed. If you haven't seen this film or even if you haven't seen it in a while I highly recommend you see it now. This film is around 15 years old but boy does it hold up.
Keanu Reeves truly shows his potential as an action star here as the tension increases throughout the film until a very rewarding climax. This film proves that Keanu has the attitude of spike with his quirky dialogue which is well-balanced by an awesome cast including the likes of Dennis Hopper as the villain.
Exhibit B:
The Matrix, obviously. Now for arguments sake let's pretend that the sequels didn't happen because those films didn't live up to the original based on the Wachowski brothers. Let's look at the original as a stand alone film. Say what you will about Keanu's acting abilities but he showed that he could be a kick-ass character with a clever story and premise backing him up as well as revolutionary special effects. This film is one I'm sure you all love without exception and obviously backs Keanu Reeves to embody the action quality of Spike's character.
Now I'll be honest I can concede that Keanu isn't the best actor out there. But he is a seasoned professional who can perform based on the scripts he is given him. The worst performances of Reeves were done during his most horrific films such as Constantine, which was just a horrible film without a redeeming quality, however some flicks become guilty pleasures to watch like Point Break or Street Kings. All I'm looking for is an enjoyable film from Cowboy Bebop, nothing spectacular but entertaining nonetheless. Personally I have faith on the source material and in Keanu Reeves to pull off Spike, now its up to Fox to handle the other duties to compliment the series in the most appropriate fashion for an adaption to the silver screen.
Also remember Cowboy Bebop fans: "No matter how much Fox can potentially destroy the film the original is still there! Cherish it, no-one has a gun to your head forcing you to watch this film."
