Ok, so I just got back from watching the infamous "The Day The Earth Stood Still" and I have to say - I really enjoyed it! Now I've heard and read negative review after negative review about this movie - more so for Keanu Reeves' character. Im not going to talk about the movie itself, I dont even know/care about the 1950's movie, or how this one doesn't live up to the original....blah blah blah. You've read and heard about that. What I will ask is....

Why the hell is the whole world against Keanu Reeves all of a sudden?

When he was Neo everyone worshipped the guy, so he's had a few slump movies during and since then (Sweet November - $15 dollars and two hours of my life I will never get back!!) but to crucify him the way some of you have is ludacris. I dont have a man crush on the guy, but I dont despise him like alot of you. The Matrix was a kick ass movie, one of the best trilogies (best being Matrix 1) of our time and Keanu portrays Neo better than any other actor could ever do. You say that he's boring as Neo, no emotion and all his lines are in monotone...well, morons, he's the protagonist!! A damn superhero! Living in a time where the survival of mankind is in your hands, would you act as flamboyant as Jack Nicholas' Joker? No douche's, the script would demand you to be as serious as you need the character to be.

Now since then, alot of critics have drawn similarities of his type of acting as Neo to most of his work post Matrix. Well, lets have a closer look - ill only pick out a few of my fav movies played by Reeves:

1) Hard Ball.

Reeves character reluntantly takes on as coaching job for a kids baseball team. Dead face you say? Lack of other emotions played by Reeves you say? .... The guy is in serious debt! He makes a few bad choices at luck and he's pretty much on the verge of being killed. Yeah, should we suggest a more Chris Tucker approach?

2) Constantine.

Badass British (in this case American) demon killer who's life is threatened by.....smoking? I dont care, I loved the comics, I loved the film and even though they chose not to go with the Sting look-a-like, I believe that Reeves gave justice to the character. Constantine has been plagued with a curse to see demonic creatures since he was a kid, he has every reason to be an emotionless and foul mouth cynic. Again, how did the audiences expect Reeves to portray the Hellblazer character? Cheery and happy that he's performing excorcists daily and negotiating his soul with Lucifer himself. Yeah right guys.

3) Street Kings.

I've never heard so much ramble about an actors performance than I did after watching this film. Reeves plays an honest cop working for a corrupt unit. His ex-partner is killed, his co-workers are all crooked and his boss is the ultimate king pin of this debauched city, so....Keanu should have played his character more like Eddie Murphy's delirious? His character is a dillusional drunk who is motivated in bringing down crooked cops at the some time saving his own ass... I say he did a damn good job of portraying a disturbed and complex persona, sure this isn't the Training Day - Alonzo Harris type cop/acting but he comes close.

And now the same is being said about his portayal of Klaatu in The Day The Earth Stood Still....

I mean really guys? He plays an ALIEN. Do we need to go further?

Ok, so.....as much I enjoy his movies (yes, even The Lake House) i'll be the first to admitt that he's not going to win an Oscar anytime soon. But this doesn't mean that he's one really, really bad actor! Yes, he seems to strike roles that don't allow him to show alot of emotional range, yes he can't really do accents, but if we are going to go into "lets torment someone's acting ability" then don't get me started on Jon Heder.... I love Jon Heder!! I really do - but let's face it, he's what I would consider as one-dimensional actor. But that's another blog :P.

What do you think?

While I agree he isn't the greatest actor, I personally find myself enjoying Keanu Reeves' films. He has been in some awful movies, but he has also been in some great ones.

@Blue Tattoo, I completely agree with you. My Own Private Idaho is a movie I always mention to those people who are willing to bash Keanu's acting just because it seems to be the norm.

Rivers Edge is another. MOPI and Rivers Edge are up there in my fav films.

He isn't the greatest actor, but he is not the worst.

Nice to see a post cutting him a little bit of slack.

There are more than just three emotions: happy, sad, mad. There are various varying degrees of emotions and Keanu's problem is he isn't very good at expressing them. I won't say he's a bad actor, but honestly he does have the same facial expression in every role he does, and I've never been particularly impressed by anything he's done.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who doesn't agree that Keanu is a bad actor. I DOES, however, play the same character alot. But plenty of actors play the same character and are considered great actors for some reason(Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington). It just so happens, he plays characters that aren't all that expressive. Though the one character that was completely different from all these was of course his role in the Bill and Ted movies.

@ Mike

Since opinions and what people want/expect from a movie differs all around. I won't call it a brilliant movie, but I won't deny I enjoyed it^^ (I wasn't expecting much of it, but that happens when they don't use Sean Bean as Constantine)

How do you make a blog argueing that Keanu can act and you don' mention My Own Private Idaho. That just makes it seem like you are not trying to make a compelling arguement

Well I guess in Day the earth stood still he wa just a dude disguised as a dude playing another dude XD

I agree with you though that Reeves isn't a bad actor..pretty good actually

Well, sorry to be the voice of dissent, still do not like Keanu Reeves. You're making a lot of excuses for why he should have been solemn and understated in the above roles, but not being on the opposite end of the spectrum from where he should be and giving a good performance aren't the same thing. I mean, if someone plays a death row inmate as a the same way they'd play Willy Wonka or Andy Kauffman, that's not just being a bad actor, that's being goddamn stupid. He's not absolutely terrible, really, he just isn't impressive. I've never seen a Keanu Reeves movie and actively thought "he did a really good job!". Sure, I didn't necessarily think he did shitty either, but still, that just makes him mediocre at best.

Look at Javier Bardem in No Country, for example. He never so much as raises his voice and he's great. Viggo Mortenson has given excellent performances in the same way and is infinitely more memorable than Keanu. Clint Eastwood has any number of amazing, quiet performances that outshine Keanu by any standard.

Thank you! I enjoyed The Day The Earth stood still as well! I don't know why everyone hates it, and I still think Keanu Reeves is an amazing actor. I still count him as one of my favorites, I don't know why everyone is agaisnt the guy all of a sudden.

Great blog!!! Agree with you 100%
