Karl Urban Teases 'Star Trek 2' Villain's Identity

There has been a veritable cyber tempest of rumors surrounding the identity of the villain in J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek 2.' We of course have the see-saw of dubious "Khan"formations, but it's starting to look like that's about as possible as seeing tribbles in the next movie. All we really know is that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing whichever villain character they decide upon. Now it looks as if Karl Urban is stoking the internet fires by seemingly letting slip the identity of our baddie. He says (of Cumberbatch)...

"He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary."

Who's Gary Mitchell? Diehard Trekkers will remember him as Capt. Kirk's former comrade who obtains telekinetic powers and turns on the Enterprise crew in the episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before." So of course the question we must ask is, do we believe Urban? They've been exceedingly tight-lipped about practically everything related to this production so far so it seems strange that Urban would just mindlessly blurt out the identity of the villain in the interview. Urban is also a really funny guy and may very well have just been messing with everyone. Now, just for a moment, let's assume that he's telling the truth and that Gary Mitchell (worst villain name ever) is our bad guy. The knee-jerk reaction is to gripe at the underwhelming decision to go with this character. Let us not forget however, that it was the decision to go with an obscure, one-off villain from the original series that gave us 'Wrath of Khan.' Personally, I think Urban's joking, but even if he's not, I know Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman, and Cumberbatch will make the most of Mitchell.

What do you guys think? Is Urban on the level here? If so, what do you think of Gary Mitchell being the villain?

I think this would be way better than Khan.  I've never understood why people were so intent on shoe-horning Khan into the story.  His background wouldn't make a whole lot of sense in the new movies anyway (how are they going to have an audience buy that he's a product of 1990s eugenics?  since the movie timeline didn't diverge until the 2009 movie, technically that'd still be his origin).    It's much better that they just take another villain from the original show and give him the "Khan treatment" (ie: flesh him out and blow him up for the big screen).  The only reason Khan would even really be an option, in my opinion, is to drum up popularity for the movie since Khan is the best-known trek villain (which is really only a compelling reason for the marketing suits).  There's no real story reasons, and in fact on paper, I think the Gary Mitchell story sounds more compelling than the Khan story in Space Seed.

@Zgamer: The Borg!?......hmmmm. Anyway Gary Mitchell could be very interesting. I don't think they need to have Khan as the main villain. Perhaps introduce him. Maybe even have Kirk and Khan working together, a mutual partnership.  Then later in the series of movies have an event that causes Khan to hate Kirk. Idk just tossing out ideas. (that won't be heard)

Ok, THAT makes more sense than Khan.

After the first Stat Trek movie, I pretty much have complete faith that whatever Abrams and crew decide to do, I will enjoy. That being said, I really hope that they don't use Khan. After all, his backstory in TWOK is surprisingly similar to Nero's.

My hope is Cumberbatch is playing a younger Dr. Soran? granted Generations was not the best star trek movie in the universe, it would be funny If Soran in fact pretends to be Gary Mitchell to get on a starfleet vessel.

I think the villain will be mad Garth. My only reason for this is that cumberbatch was clad all in black.
