Karen Allen Hints At Status Of 'Indiana Jones 5'

Yesterday, the entire Indiana Jones franchise hit Blu-ray for the first time. Today it's being reported that 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' star Karen Allen made some comments relating to the status of a potential fifth movie. Apparently worried that she would say the wrong thing during the press campaign for the Blu-ray set, Karen sought guidance from Steven Spielberg as to where the proposed next sequel was in the development process. During a recent interview, here's what Allen had to say when presented with the question as to whether she would do another Indiana Jones film...

"I would! And I, in fact, just talked with Steven Spielberg recently—we e-mailed back and forth, and I said, 'What should I say? I'm doing this publicity, what should I say if people ask me that question?' And he said, 'It's in George's [Lucas] hands! I'm game, Harrison's game, and now it's up to George to write the script or to get the script organized, and the story.' And so I think it's—they want to do a fifth, from what I understand, but they don't want to do it just to do it, they want to do it if they can come up with a story that everybody is happy with and that everybody likes."

As much as I love Indiana Jones, a character that was so vital to my movie geek education, I, like many of you, am not jazzed about the idea of 'Indy 5.' If I may beat a dead horse for a moment, 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' was an absolute abomination that I would rather forget exists than accept as part of Indiana Jones canon. It definitely soured me on the idea of ever anticipating another cash-grabby fifth installment. If Spielberg and George Lucas are absolutely hell-bent on doing another film in this franchise, meaning there's nothing we can do to stop them, I guess I'm glad to hear a little more care is being taken to write a better script...or at least one that everybody is happy with. The script is really the biggest issue with 'KotCS,' but it was certainly not the only issue. Even if they bring in the best screenwriter in the biz, Harrison Fordis unfortunately just beyond the appropriate age to keep this thing going. I love seeing Indy's adventures, but at this point, it's time to hang up the whip.

What do you guys think? Do Allen's comments make you think we're any closer to 'Indy 5?'Anybody want to make a case for why they should do another?

Haven't seen Crystal Skull...first Indy film I've missed.

It'd be alright, but I pray to god that there will be no George Lucas involvement.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wasn't that bad, just entirely pointless and Ford was and is too old for the role.

Mr. Spielberg, please leave it in your hands. If Mr. Lucas writes the script, I'm pretty sure goblins will pop up at the end.

I don't get why people are all like 'KotCR die!', I don't get what the problem is. While I agree it is not the best of the series, it definitely fits in with Indiana Jones. I think the worst was Temple of Doom to be fair, which was still fairly good.

Indiana Jones 4 is one the most underrated movies and it's only cause of the expectation. Personally, although Korey and some of the spill crew regret giving it this rating, I think it really is 'Full Price'. Sure, I was like 'Whaaaaaaat?!' at the end of the movie, but other than that, it was a solid movie.

It might be cause there were some parts where it just didn't have the feel of a Indiana Jones movie. For me, It didn't take away from the experience much.

Listen to what Cinemassacre's James Rolfe (The guy who plays the Angry VideoGame Nerd) has to say, because I agree with him:

I'm sorry but just because one bad movie was made, that doesn't mean they should stop this altogether, I think they should have one more movie to end on a bang.  I agree Ford is too old to keep this up, so do the last one, knock it out the park, and be done.  If you remember, there was a time many were disappointed in Temple of Doom.

Trebor, at least Karen Allen had more importance to Indy 4 than the girl in Indy 2, lol. (No disrespect to that actrice, who is married to Spielberg) :)

I liked Indiana Jones 4,... except for the ending and the CGI.

It was to see Indy again and knowing he ended up in a god situation for retirement. They definatly shouldn't do another sequel. Before you know it there is just as much 'old Indy' as there is 'real Indy'. One '20 years later' film is fun, two is overkill.

But if they have to do it then please stick to fantasy, don't make it science fiction. The motivation for Indiana Jones to go out on another adventure while he is 70 needs to be really good. Whatever he is searching for has to be 'his' grail quest. That made me realise: in the 5th film he'll be as old as his father was in the 3th film...

up to George to write the script?

Are you kidding me? That guy and script never (ever) go well together.

My point is that I would keep that script out of his hands at all costs. Let him keep butchering up his star wars and leave something that has potential alone!
