The director Joe Johnston (Director of Jurassic Park 3) is saying that there is no reason that people would go to back to the island again. According to the report out of AICN, the idea is to take the 4th installment into a "New Direction".
"There is a great story for the fourth one that I would be interested in getting involved with and it's nothing like the first three. It sort of takes the franchise off in a completely different direction, which is the only way I would want to get involved." said Joe, "We've done that and it's been done three times. Why would anybody go back to that island? It was hard enough to figure out the second and third reason for them to go, but it would take it off in a whole other trilogy basically, but when it gets to that level it's sort of about studios and Steven's thing and who knows. I think we are at that point where we are due for another one if we are going to do it. They had what four years between them? 1992... 1996 or 1997, and then 2001, so we are past due. I don't know, but we will see."
And, while it is true that there hasn't been a start-up date set for the 4th film, Jeff Goldblum is signed on to reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm.
But here's the problem with the concept of a "New Direction" with "Jurassic Park". What exactly is new at this point? We've already seen what happens when the dinosaurs get loose on the island in Jurassic Park. Then of course, we get the dinosaurs suddenly taken off the island and running amok through San Diego in "The Lost World: Jurassic Park". And of course, let's not forget about the fact that we've already gone back to the island and seen what happens when the dinosaurs are left alone with the second "Research Center" in "Jurassic Park III" So, where do you go that's "New" to explore? Because honestly, I can't really see anything that is going to be worth making a movie out of. So, what are the scenarios of a "New Jurassic Park"?
Well, is it possible that instead of humans going to the island we get to see the dinosaurs touring a major city? If that's the case, haven't we sort of already seen that movie done several different ways? We've had Cloverfield, Godzilla (Well, several Godzillas in fact), King Kong, and of course let's not forget the classic movie " The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms".
This concept isn't a new idea. In fact, I sort of feel that it's actually been over-done, and is sort of boring now. I'm tired of seeing the killer Dinosaur (Monster) attacking a major city and leaving a bunch of destruction in it's path. I mean, really there are only two different solutions to this type of movie. Either they end up killing the creature, or it's somehow or another lured away from the major city and "returned" to the wild.... sort of like how they lured the creature away in Jurassic Park 2 and Godzilla (Well, several Godzillas in fact).
Or is it possible that instead of going to let the dinosaur roam through a city, we get to see several dinosaurs all grouped together in their youth and having an interesting time exploring the world around them? Well, we have sort of seen that one done to death as well. Let's be honest about it, it's not the first time that a group of young dinosaurs teamed up together. The Land Before Time (Holy shit, there's been 13 of these movies made?) has done that story over and over (And apparently over and over again and again) to the point of being nothing but a franchise. Even "We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story" did it with music. (Okay, sure it was animated, but the concept is the same a bunch of young dinosaurs together).
And yes, it's a complete stretch that doesn't fit in the Jurassic Park world. But it's a "new direction" that has been done before, and will probably be done again before long.
Or will we get another story of someone wanting to go back to the island in the hopes of "Making it rich" or discovering some "new fact" regarding Dinosaurs? Either way, the concept of going "back to the island" has been done, repeatedly. Movies such as "The Lost World" has been going on since 1925.
Even more recently was the TV version of "The Lost World", which made the mistake of running the story too long and ended up loosing it's way. (Ran for 3 seasons).
See, the problem is that there is nothing really new at all about going back to the island. It's been done before. Hell, even in the world of Jurassic Park it's been done before. Where is there room to really go back to the island that hasn't already been done before?
Well, the only way that there can be a "new direction" in Jurassic Park is to.... uh, okay...... hold on..... I know this one. Okay, let's see...... Maybe instead of trying to actually have dinosaurs in the movie, we leave them out of the .... no that wouldn't work, it's the only reason we see the Jurassic Park movies anyway. What about some form of love story regarding two dino..... oh no, let's not go into the whole Dino-sex stuff; furries and anime are bad enough. Well, how about instead of being a dinosaur it's some big huge animal... shit, that's King Kong.
Okay gang. I'm completely stumped on this one. Where do you go that's a "New Direction" with Jurassic Park? Is there anything that CAN be called "New" regarding the set-up? It's been done before in one way or another that I can think of. Granted, since I'm a bit of a sci-fi geek, a 1970's-1980's b-budget exploitation geek, and of course let's not forget the fact that I'm just completely fucked up in the head and have seen shit like "Massacre in Dinosaur Valley".....
as well as stuff like "When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth...."
and of course, let's not forget the cult-classic "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs".....
and I'm ashamed to admit that I've even seen "Dinosaucers"
Anyway, the question of this particular blog is: Is there a "New Direction" for Jurassic Park 4 to go to? Or should we just accept the fact that there shouldn't be a Jurassic Park 4 at all, and end the franchise at one great movie, one mediocre movie, and one shitty movie?
Because if you are thinking that seeing the military taking on the Dinosaurs would be a good idea, I remind you that we've sort of seen that movie in Godzilla. (Well, several Godzillas actually).
How about rebuilding and opening the park to the public and then, yeah, I said this piece of genius already.

Joseph Mazzello the guy that played tim in the first movie (possobly Ariana Richards as lex mabe just as a cameo) - you bring him back you set it in the year 2007 its the 15th anniversary of the first park Disaster- tim and a news crew go to the first island to film a documentry - then "the shit hits the fan" some of the dinosaurs have survived and start attacking and eating news people Tim must lead the groop of survivors to the other side of the island- all the time being hunterd by a raptor - ( not just any raptor the raptor he and his sister locked in the freezer)- throw in a hot reporter chic as a love intrest and you have a movie
ps i dont care who they get as the Director as long as its not Michael Bay he already shit on half my childhood he doesn't need to shit on the rest
