If it's crap ... We'll tell you

It seemed impossible. With every setback, the likelihood of seeing another 'Jurassic Park' got slimmer and slimmer. 'Jurassic Park 4' had been talked about for a long time, but with several false starts and still no director attached, the extinction of the project loomed. But life finds a way...whether we want it to or not. Not only is Universal still serious about producing 'JP 4,' they've now gone and set a release date. The movie is purportedly due in theaters June 13th, 2014. Though not reported to be directing, Steven Spielberg will be aboard as a producer. We have also learned that the latest franchise installment will be shot in 3D. On that front, Universal will also re-release the original 'Jurassic Park' in theaters in 3D. At this time, 'Jurassic Park 4' still has no director.
I'm going to forgo the usual "do we really need another 'Jurassic Park'" diatribe because clearly the studio is so bent on making 'JP 4' that a meteorite couldn't stop this thing. Therefore our bitching about its moving forward seems a moot point. And now let us leap into the devil's advocate portion of the program. Do we even know what concept they've settled on? At one point John Sayles had written a script about a mutant dinosaur army, taking a page out of the Island of Dr. Moreau playbook. There was even unofficial concept art for this bizarre storyline. That script was long-ago scrapped so with no director, no solid screenplay, and no idea which (if any) original characters may be returning, we really are wandering in the dark. It does seem, given all the variables not yet in place, that summer of 2014 puts 'Jurassic Park 4' on an incredibly tight schedule. My hope is that the import elements--like, you know, plot--aren't rushed to the point of failure.
It's too bad Gareth Edwards is busy with 'Godzilla,' because this would be a perfect project for him. One wonders if Spielberg's recent announcement that he's placing 'Robopocalypse' on indefinite hold and 'Jurassic Park 4's sudden release date appearance are related. Could Spielberg be considering returning to the franchise? Obviously that speculation is based on a loose set of circumstances, but it honestly wouldn't surprise me. As to the 3D, I'm conditionally on board with it. That condition is whether the effects will be the shoddy CG of 'Jurassic Park 3,' or a more in line with Phil Tippett's animatronic/CG blend from the first 'Jurassic Park.' I'm not looking forward to the post-converted, shoehorned 3D of the re-release, but if Tippett's effects were shot in such a way as to accommodate the extra dimension, that could be something pretty spectacular. We've gotten no indication as to whether Tippett will even be involved, but if his style of practical effects augmented by CG is utilized, then I'm copacetic with the 3D. And that's coming from someone who generally doesn't care for the gimmick.
What do you guys think? Is 2014 too soon? Who would you have direct 'JP 4?' How does the 3D prospect sit with you?

Comment by Dohguy on January 14, 2013 at 6:08pm I don't know what they could possibly do other than something that's blatant Dino exploitation at this point. But if its at least entertaining. I'll watch it.
Comment by Chris james on January 14, 2013 at 4:54pm love the original but the sequels were total garbage. Hopefully part 4 will be an improvement
Comment by thekingofreyes3 on January 14, 2013 at 3:52pm I really don't know how I feel about this one
Comment by Happy Birthday Roboto on January 14, 2013 at 3:38pm It will eventually get made, because they know they can make money off it!
If they get Andy Serkis to play Motion Captured dinosaurs, then I'm in. Otherwise... meh.
Comment by Boatloads1017 on January 14, 2013 at 3:00pm Two shitty sequels with a third on the way. Woot. c.c
I was thinking they had trow that out the windows since Michael Chricton died.... Hope they had stick to that
Comment by nonillogical on January 14, 2013 at 2:23pm Bring it on. I'm not going to be too heartbroken if it doesn't end up being amazing. The sequels were pretty mediocre but still entertaining, and I'm sure a new installment will at least outdo those.
