It seemed impossible. With every setback, the likelihood of seeing another 'Jurassic Park' got slimmer and slimmer. 'Jurassic Park 4' had been talked about for a long time, but with several false starts and still no director attached, the extinction of the project loomed. But life finds a way...whether we want it to or not. Not only is Universal still serious about producing 'JP 4,' they've now gone and set a release date. The movie is purportedly due in theaters June 13th, 2014. Though not reported to be directing, Steven Spielberg will be aboard as a producer. We have also learned that the latest franchise installment will be shot in 3D. On that front, Universal will also re-release the original 'Jurassic Park' in theaters in 3D. At this time, 'Jurassic Park 4' still has no director.

I'm going to forgo the usual "do we really need another 'Jurassic Park'" diatribe because clearly the studio is so bent on making 'JP 4' that a meteorite couldn't stop this thing. Therefore our bitching about its moving forward seems a moot point. And now let us leap into the devil's advocate portion of the program. Do we even know what concept they've settled on? At one point John Sayles had written a script about a mutant dinosaur army, taking a page out of the Island of Dr. Moreau playbook. There was even unofficial concept art for this bizarre storyline. That script was long-ago scrapped so with no director, no solid screenplay, and no idea which (if any) original characters may be returning, we really are wandering in the dark. It does seem, given all the variables not yet in place, that summer of 2014 puts 'Jurassic Park 4' on an incredibly tight schedule. My hope is that the import elements--like, you know, plot--aren't rushed to the point of failure.

It's too bad Gareth Edwards is busy with 'Godzilla,' because this would be a perfect project for him. One wonders if Spielberg's recent announcement that he's placing 'Robopocalypse' on indefinite hold and 'Jurassic Park 4's sudden release date appearance are related. Could Spielberg be considering returning to the franchise? Obviously that speculation is based on a loose set of circumstances, but it honestly wouldn't surprise me. As to the 3D, I'm conditionally on board with it. That condition is whether the effects will be the shoddy CG of 'Jurassic Park 3,' or a more in line with Phil Tippett's animatronic/CG blend from the first 'Jurassic Park.' I'm not looking forward to the post-converted, shoehorned 3D of the re-release, but if Tippett's effects were shot in such a way as to accommodate the extra dimension, that could be something pretty spectacular. We've gotten no indication as to whether Tippett will even be involved, but if his style of practical effects augmented by CG is utilized, then I'm copacetic with the 3D. And that's coming from someone who generally doesn't care for the gimmick.

What do you guys think? Is 2014 too soon? Who would you have direct 'JP 4?' How does the 3D prospect sit with you?

I've already brought up the fact that the last two Jurassic Park sequels were fucking terrible but the fact that it's taken them this long to put a fourth film together and that they've got the writers of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes to write it, I'm going to give it a chance.

There is a slight chance that I will see Jurassic Park in theaters again for this: there will be IMAX screenings during the first week. I'd love to go see it again like that.

they should give it to Michael Bay...then we can see some Dinobots...ME GRIMLOCK!!!

I'm not going to go see 3D re-releases of older movies in the theater, but fwiw, the preview for Jurassic Park 3D before the Hobbit actually made it look like they did a great job on the post conversion. Some scenes actually seem made for it in retrospect.

I'm more concerned with them re-releasing the original in 3D. Really, really .... have we learned nothing about post conversion 3D of classic movies.

Well we can't stop it so why complain? It won't be as great as the original so why compare?

With that aside I'm just happy to see an addition to the series. It's a series that carries great potential already so if we're being forced with more content we might as well look forward to it. I just hope that it's well done and that it doesn't rely heavy on CGI but relies more so on animatronics.

One word that would sell me the movie: Goldblum.

I don't see the point of this remake, but it's still a great premise with room to tell an amazing story so I'm mehh on it still more relevant then Godzilla and better then a reboot i suppose

Still not sure I believe this is going to happen, like you said it's had so many false starts. Will wait for the trailer or at least some promotional material. The 1 year deadline and lack of an idea is worrying though.

I have no hopes of this being the amazing follow up I want it to be, saying that is almost laughable. But if it's entertaining like JP3 sans annoying characters I won't be too heart-broken, I like watching dinosaurs. Hey, wouldn't it be interesting if the reason this project suddenly got kicked of is because they found an unpublished manuscript by Chricton?

I know I'm basing this soley on Rise of The Planet of the Apes but I'm pretty jazzed those writers are tackling this movie.  I just hope they don't stray too far from what made the novel and the first movie so special, a dinosaur theme park.  In fact, the Jurassic Park Genesis videogame included some interesting theme park attractions that would make a Jurassic Park v2 larger and neater.  Originally I would have liked a total reboot of the series that stuck close to the original novel but so many of the novel's elements were used in all three movies that it would feel too much like "been there, done that".  Long story short, I'm interested.
