This year has been a sad one.
We have lost some of the world's most talented entertainers.
Heath Ledger, who's star was beginning to shine, was struck down in his prime. Leaving behind a legacy of daring roles that will go down in history.
Issac Hayes, musical trendsetter, visionary, & humanitarian passed after giving us the gift of song that will outlast the test of time.
Bernie Mac, The King of Comedy, gave us the gift laughter & unrelenting truth.
Harsh as it was, he let us have it....and I thank him for that.
Well tonight we can add another to that list, Julius Carry.
(The famous KISS MY CONVERSE! scene from The Last Dragon)
Many of you do not know who Julius J. Carry III is.
Many of you probably never seen any of his movies or the many television shows he appeared in.
Many of you are probably to young or just forgot.
Well, to me, he was a legend.
To me he will withstand the test of time.
On August 19, 2008 he died of pancreatic cancer.
He was the first actor I knew & loved.
At the age of five I was introduced to Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon.
The story of a young martial artist ("Bruce" Leroy Green) who is on a quest to find "The Glow".
On his journey through 1980's New York City, he encounters a man who will stop at nothing to prove that
he is the one and only master. That man is Sho-Nuff, The Shogun of Harlem. A violent gang leader who constantly provokes Leroy into fighting him.
Now, from a technical stand-point I know that The Last Dragon isn't the best movie ever made.
The acting was campy and the writing needed some serious help.
But you know what, that's what made it a classic.
Of all the performances Carry's stood out.
Sho-nuff was ruthless, cunning, and an all around Bad Muthaf**ka.
The confrontations between him and Leroy were classic. From the moment he bursted into the movie theater and challenged everyone in it, till his defeat at the hand's of Bruce Leroy, he stole every scene in the movie he was in.
It was like watching Batman & The Joker go at it (If they were black, had Afro's, & danced to Debarge's Rhythm of the Night).
When I was younger I wanted to be him (actually I still do). Yea, he may have been an asshole, but he was larger than life to me.
(The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. panel at Comic-con 2006 Julius J. Carry III and some random white guy)
In edition to playing one of the most memorable characters of all time, Carry appeared in numerous television roles, including Dr. Abraham Butterfield on Doctor, Doctor and the bounty hunter Lord Bowler in the The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. He has also appeared on shows such as Family Matters, Murphy Brown, & A Different World.
For me he was an inspiration & will forever be missed.
I can see him in heaven now.
A group of angels kick in the pearly gates & line up in formation.
In between them a tall man emerges.
He's dressed in a long fur.
Hair's blown out; rockin' the biggest stunna shades.
As he enters the gates, he proclaims with the cockiest of attitudes, "AM I THE MEANEST???"
Angels scream, "SHO'NUFF!"
He proclaims again, "AM I THE PRETTIEST???"
Angels scream, "SHO'NUFF"
Again, he proclaims in an even louder voice, "AM I THE BADDEST MO-FO-LOW DOWN AROUND THIS TOWN????"
Angels scream, "SHO'NUFF!"
He asks them, "WELL WHO AM I???"
Angels scream, "SHO'NUFF!"
He asks again, "WHO AM I???"
Angels scream, "SHO'NUFF!"
He then looks at the angels with the sternest of looks and yells, "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!"
Angels scream, "SHO'NUFF!"
With all of heaven at his attention he finally introduces himself, "Julius J. Carry III!"
And if you don't like that
KISS MY CONVERSE! KISS'EM!!!
