Movie: Julie & Julia
Author: Leon

Outside of being pure food porn (see it on a full stomach and it’ll still make you hungry!) Julie & Julia is something of a chick-flick framed around a biopic. Amy Adams turns is another good performance as the real-life blogger, Julie Powell, an aimless woman who dedicates of year of her life to following Julia Child’s cookbook. But it’s Meryl Streep’s movie all the way. Borrowing a bit from Dan Akroyd’s SNL impression and using ‘Hagrid technology’ to make her physically tower over everyone else in the cast, Meryl Streep brings Julia Child to (larger than) life onscreen with so much exuberance you can’t help but love her.

The movie cuts back and forth between the contemporary story of Julie and the origin of Julia Child, one of the world’s most famous chefs, and the longer it went on the more whiny and uninteresting Julie became. By the end I was annoyed that director, Nora Ephron felt like she needed Julie to make Julia Child relevant at all. Without question, the person who creates the art is infinitely more interesting than the one who writes (or blogs) about them.

…and yes, I am fully aware of the irony that I’m sitting here writing about Nora Ephron’s movie.

I took my mom and dad to see this movie on Saturday. Not only do I think it was good, but I'll go even further and say that it was two...two good movies in one.

Good point Martin, I really didn't give a damn about Julie in this movie, for me it was all about Julia's life. The lobster scene was humorous though.
It was a good movie, but ran a tad bit too long. The one thing I would say it really needed was a major conflict for the main character to overcome, and in this movie I didn't see that. I saw a few mini conflicts whose resolutions left me unsatisfied. I would have preferred it if Julie was haunted by Julia's angry ghost, post book deal. The ghost would constantly say "Bon Jour!"

So you felt that the Julia Child's part were strong enough on its own? Was Amy Adams good in this movie?

I don't understand why we couldn't have just had a straight up biopic of Julia Child. Throwing in the boring, existential woeful life of Julie turned me away from this movie. Even the trailer indicated she would definatly become more whiny and uninteresting.

I wonder how many people Julia Child killed when she was a spy....

Now THAT would be an interesting movie!

Food Porn...that pretty much describes it..LOL
I was tempted to get Julia's book and make that last "duck" dish. It looked so freaking good.
