Julianne Moore Could Be Playing 'Carrie's Mom

Since things really got moving on the remake of Brian De Palma's 1976 horror classic 'Carrie,' based on the novel by Stephen King, it has become a rather interesting project. The remake will be directed by Kimberly Peirce ('Boys Don't Cry') and will star Chloe Moretz in the title role of the bullied teenage girl with telekinetic powers. But of course, Carrie herself was not the only thing that made the original film iconic. Apart from the memorable prom blood-letting scene, the film's scariest element is Carrie's hyper-religious mother (played originally by Piper Laurie). So of course the question became, who would step into the role for the remake. It looks as if Columbia Pictures is in talks with Oscar-nominated actress Julianne Moore ('Boogie Nights,' 'The Kids Are Alright') to do just that. While no official deal has been made, by all reports things are looking very promising that she will land the part.

As much as I like Chloe Moretz, if they miscast Carrie's mom, it's very likely that this remake will not work. I'm a fan of Moore as an actress, but I'm having a little trouble seeing her in this part. Obviously she's immensely talented, but I've never seen her play anything as menacing as Mrs. White. I'm not saying she can't do it, and in fact she's already been involved in two separate studio revisits to horror films: 'The Silence of the Lambs' sequel 'Hannibal,' and Gus Van Sant's 'Psycho' remake. I just think she's a little too alluring for this role, there's nothing inherently off-putting about her and that can be a detriment to this character. Though I suppose a careful application of makeup could change that. In terms of performance, it will be interesting to see if she can dig deep and access this level of unrelenting darkness. What do you guys think?

Do you feel Julianne Moore is right for this part? If not, who would you cast?

Julianne Moore has consistently surprised me, she always seemed extremely underrated. Here's hoping she'll surprise me again.

It may be interesting. A little bit of make up can go a long way.

I'm actually pretty excited for the remake. I've enjoyed watching both of the Carrie movies that are out currently, and I have read the original Stephen King novel. As long as the writers/director/producers are able to come up with something that carries the spirit of the book, pays tribute to the original, but also gives it a new spin, it should be a good movie.

Every time I see Julianne Moore in something I'm always impressed by her acting ability. Having not seen the original Carrie I can't make much of a judgement call whether or not she can pull off the character, but my hopes remain high.

Maybe Helen Mirren or Glenn Close or Meryl Streep.
