Remember that period of time right before 'The Avengers' came out? When the hype was reaching a fever pitch and unease bubbled as to whether it could live up to such rampant expectation? Luckily, the movie smashed our expectations, and when the bottom line clocked in at over $1 billion, it was a cinch we'd be getting plenty more cinematic Avengers tales. The question then became, would Joss Whedon return to helm future films? No small portion of the greatness of 'The Avengers' was Whedon's directing and screenplay. The studio would have to be crazy not to bring him back, but it's not as if we haven't seen studios do crazy things in the past. Well rejoice fellow geeks, Marvel has announced that not only will Whedon write and direct 'The Avengers 2,' but he has also signed a three-year deal with the company. The deal also involves his helping the studio develop a TV series for ABC and allows him to "contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
Thrilled does not even begin to cover it. Sure, a certain amount of the excitement that will inevitably follow this announcement will be chalked up to fanboy loyalty. Though even if you had never seen a single episode of 'Buffy' or 'Firefly,' it's hard to argue that 'The Avengers' was a triumph. This collaboration with Marvel continues to feel like long-overdue validation for the immensely talented Whedon. I'm of course looking forward to what Whedon does with the next Avengers movie, but this concept of ongoing creative contribution is even more intriguing. I have a feeling Whedon is not the type of guy to step on anyone's toes, but the idea of him being able to lend his talents and comic book expertise to future projects when called upon is fantastic. It could also mean Whedon will direct a Marvel property outside of The Avengers, which would be amazing. Marvel is demonstrating a commitment to quality that is redefining the superhero movie genre and the next three years should be very interesting.
What do you guys think? Excited Whedon is helming 'Avengers 2?' What other projects do you think he might contribute to in one form or another? Could he direct other properties?

Comment by gorillahandz on August 9, 2012 at 4:30pm I am betting that DC/Warner Bros. are kicking themselves for killing Whedon's Wonder Woman movie. Great for Whedon and great for the fans of superhero movies.
Comment by Richard Dempsey on August 9, 2012 at 3:23pm The movie isn't top 5 of the year, but nethertheless, it was good. A sequel would be awesome, I'm excited that Mr. Whedon is doing it, but this time, make it just a tad darker. Not Dark Knight Dark, just dark enough to make it seem realistic.
Comment by Dreux Pronounced Drew on August 9, 2012 at 1:31pm I've watched the movie since first seeing it with that "eager child" response, and he's since gone back into hiding. The movie isn't as mind-blowingly amazing as it was the first time I saw it, but it is still a quality film that I feel some people are overrating and others (including yourself) are underrating. Maybe it's a case where both sides aren't exactly gonna be giving the fairest judgment, but I think that for what the movie was trying to be and for what it was really meant to achieve, it achieved it in spades.

Comment by Wodenson on August 9, 2012 at 1:15pm What? I was looking for a movie where the characters acted like they did in their own previous movies and state true to the universe they created. I wanted to love the movie, I really enjoyed the movies leading up to it and even Iron Man 2 wasn't awful and this wasn't awful. When properly examined, the movie is mindless action with characters ham-fisted into fitting a Disney plot, complete with a happily ever after. Your "eager child" is clouding your ability to look at this film objectively and not through the lens of an 8 year old boy jumping up and down in excitement.

Fair enough, but that's still hardly objective criticism. My point was, if you were looking for everything you've listed (twice now), you looked in the wrong place, plain and simple. Again, it was character-driven, and just because you didn't sense the tension between the characters (which is hard to believe considering it played out right there in front of you) doesn't mean it wasn't there. Your indifference towards it has clouded your recognition of the film's achievements beyond the mindless action you keep referencing. It's an unfortunate trend I'm seeing of people downplaying the qualities of a film to bring out their own problems with it, almost acting as if they're breaking the news to people that the movie they enjoyed is "just ok", when they themselves haven't even properly examined or reviewed it.
Comment by AnorexicShark on August 9, 2012 at 12:55pm What's next? James Cameron is going to shoot 3 avatar movies at the same time?...wait. Not really worried about the second being good, more of the tier two films being bad. Because they have to do that again, but with more movies this time.
