There is no denying that Marvel scored a major win signing Joss Whedon to direct 'The Avengers.' Since the film's gargantuan success, Whedon has not only been hired to direct the sequel, but also serve as an adviser on a number of upcoming Marvel projects. Now, in further acknowledgment of his talents, ABC has ordered a pilot for an all new S.H.I.E.L.D. series from Whedon. The show will focus on the top secret spy organization that formed The Avengers. The show, just called 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' will be written by Whedon, his brother Jed, and Maurissa Tancharoen. Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who worked on Joss' 'Firefly,' will serve as showrunners as well as producers. Whedon will also direct the pilot if his schedule permits. Whedon had this to say on the project...
"The storyline for the proposed series will be largely 'autonomous' from the Avengers sequel feature that is also in the works. ['S.H.I.E.L.D.'] will revolve around the activities of the top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D espionage org featured in Avengers."
Whedon coming back to TV while simultaneously still working within The Avengers universe? I'd say that qualifies as good news. I will say I am glad to hear the show will not directly tie-in to the next Avengers movie. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will take a cursory glance at this project and assume it to be nothing more than large-scale marketing for 'Avengers 2.' However, I'm interested to see the weekly espionage adventures of this organization. My big question here is whether Samuel L. Jackson will be able to reprise his role as Nick Fury. He's done a few shows here and there, but never anything that required this much commitment. If he can't do it, who are they going to cast as Fury? I hope Joss directs the pilot, and several other episodes, but just having his voice represented in the writing should allow for one fantastic series.
What do you guys think? Excited for the S.H.I.E.L.D. series? Any initial thoughts as to what ground they should cover? Something from the comics perhaps?

Comment by Santos on August 30, 2012 at 10:11pm I'm sorry, but even with Whedon involved my expectations are low. When they put S.H.I.EL.D. on TV before, it looked like this:
Comment by PanchoCheeseCake on August 30, 2012 at 5:20pm Samuel Jackson is in like 30 movies a year, large role or not, so why not just give him this much work?

Comment by Pablo A. on August 30, 2012 at 10:26am I hope, it will be something akin to powers where a group of SHIELD agents are in charge or super powered crime, you can put the C-list villains or heroes.
It can be based on Project Pegasus, they don't need to use Nick Fury other than for small cameos if they put someone else in charge like Carol Danvers (Ms Marvel) similar to what they did on the ultimate universe.
I see a lot of potential in a series revolving around SHIELD, I also like that is not directly involved with the movie universe but can be.
Comment by Proto on August 30, 2012 at 8:56am I wonder how Fox will cancel a show that's airing on ABC
Comment by Bryan K on August 30, 2012 at 4:47am I am exiced. There are alot of speculations I could make, but there is one thing I know. HIMYM has only got a season or 2 left. If it lasts that long, Maria Hill could join the the show during Season two or three. Also, any one of the "Whedon Family" would be perfect in a S.H.I.E.D. show.
Comment by Luke Hero on August 30, 2012 at 2:17am S. Jackson could still play Fury...not as if he would have to be in every episode...The series should focus on the shield agents themselves and their efforts to fight against 2nd & 3rd tear villains like Task Master.
