Josh Duhamel Not Returning For 'Transformers 4'

Yesterday it was announced that Michael Bay is definitely returning to direct 'Transformers 4.' That announcement came courtesy of Bay's producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura who also let slip that the fourth installment of the giant robot franchise would be a reboot. Today, some de facto casting news has surfaced thanks to franchise star Josh Duhamel. At last night's launch party for Sony's PS Vita, Duhamel told E! that he would not be returning for 'Trans4mers,' and seemed fairly certain that no one from the original cast, or at least the cast of 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon,' would be returning either. Here's what he said...

"I don't think anybody's doing it. I know Shia [LaBoeuf]'s not doing it. I don't think Tyrese or Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] or anybody else is doing it. Whenever these movies make that much money they're going to make as many as they can. I haven't heard anything about it. They haven't called me."

At first glance, this would be shocking news, and Duhamel seems put off by not having been called. The fact remains however that, according to Di Bonaventura, the newest Transformers film will be a reboot of the franchise. Reboots often involve entirely new stories with entirely new casts of characters so the fact that they wouldn't be bringing back characters from the first three films is not surprising. I'll be honest, I liked Josh Duhamel in the first three films and I'll be sorry to see him out of the fourth installment. However, I'm not going to pretend that the idea of a complete absence of Shia LaBoeuf in 'Trans4mers' is not a huge enticement for me to see it. So the question now becomes, how will the story be revamped to inject new life into the franchise?

Any ideas from our trusty Spillios?

That an great notion. Reboot the franchise should be excellent start: like focus on cyberton for about 10-15 minutes throughout the movie. If they pull this off, it'll totally sell like new Window Laptops!

How is it a reboot if its the 4th installment, would it be better to call it transformers?

If they're doing a reboot, why are they still using Michael Bay? That's like having a director do a remake of his own film.

This is great news, the reboot should be an epic battle that in the 2nd act unites Autobots and Decepticons against a common foe so similar yet different to them that they set aside their differences to take on the menace of the GoBots... Michael Bay, B1tches.

He was the only real human character in the entire franchise. The main reason, why these movies failed ( story wise), was because the transformers weren't the main focus, and were just side characters in their own movie. Which is the complete opposite of the cartoons. Where the humans were the side characters, and the transformers were so focused on, you felt they had human emotions etc.

Michael Bay still doesn't know how to do that, nor cares about Transformers. The only thing he got right in those films (imo), was: co-operation with military, Transformer voices and getting ILM to do special effects. I don't want another Transformers film, directed by Michael Bay. When you think about it, the first 10 minutes of every film, has it's own prequel/ story arch, that is more interesting than the rest of the film.

Transformers 1: The Cube/All Spark

Voice-over briefly describing the device that creates life for transformers, cybertronian war, and loss of ultimate power.

Transformers 2: The Sun Harvester

Voice over, with footage of ancient primes getting ready to harvest our sun for energon, only to stop. Because of signs of intelligent life on the prehistoric planet Earth.

Transformers 3: The Pillars

Voice over and footage of the Autobot shuttle: Arch, trying to leave Cybertron, before the end of the war.

Altogether, those 3 movies are over 7 hours long. Out of those seven hours. Cybertron, the planet, and home, of all Transformers, has less than 7 minutes screen time. Michael Bay doesn't know how to balance Transformers and humans. You need someone who can balance the cybernetic organisms/ human interactions, like Kenneth Branagh did with Thor. Or you need someone who knows how can take the Transformers history/ mythology seriously , and try to update it for the general audience. Like  J.J. Abrams , did for Star Trek. Personally, Steven Spielberg, would have been, the best person from the beginning. But his heart wasn't in it, which is why he was just the "executive producer".

@Mychal Harrison

not true, after Spider-Man 3 it was only 3 years until SONY announced the reboot

you gotta think about that considering there have been 3 movies and they started all the way back in 2002

thank God

they really should get rid of the human characters

like Carlyle said back in 2007 "The whole point of the cartoon was giant robots transforming into stuff and then kicking the crap out of each other"

plain and simple

I like Shia but lets focus on the damn robots and pray to God that they dont insert any more bad comedy

The first one came out in 2007.  Why in the fuck does it need a reboot?  Hell, Spiderman at least waited till 10+ years after the first one came out to do a reboot.

Comment by Ferry2dead on February 16, 2012 at 6:43pm

Not another piece of crap movie from another piece of crap director. I would go see it if they make it a prequel before they got to earth or make it a "Gobots movie.

Comment by Metal Face on February 16, 2012 at 6:32pm

How about they actually focus on the god damn transformers in the new one for christ sake. That was the main problem with all 3 movies. Nobody gives a fuck about the humans in a movie filled with giant transforming robots.
