Joseph Gordon-Levitt Eyeing 'Little Shop Of Horrors' Remake

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an interesting guy. He got his start as a child actor, with his big break coming on TV's '3rd Rock from the Sun.' He's made a tremendous comeback in the last few years, and will even be featured in Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Rises,' one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. So naturally now he would want to...star in a 'Little Shop of Horrors' remake? Well, word from skid row is that is exactly what's happening. JGL is helping develop Warner Brothers' remake of 'Little Shop' and, if all goes according to plan, he will also star as nerdy, put-upon florist Seymour Krelborn. Playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who brought us 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' and who is currently writing the 'Carrie' remake, will pen the script. No official deals have yet been made and as of now it is unclear when production would begin.

I really like 'Little Shop of Horrors.' A lot of people have seen the stellar 1986 Frank Oz version of the film, but I'd hazard far fewer people have seen the 1960 movie directed by b-movie king Roger Corman. I recommend both, but for very different reasons. I think, as out-of-left-field as this project seems, Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be an outstanding Seymour. I know he's become something of a dashing leading man of late, but this would be such a great opportunity for him to once again explore the geek roots (no pun intended) that launched his career. Also, both existing film versions of 'Little Shop' are pretty campy so it's not as if we're in danger of treading on holy ground here. All that being said, I can't help but have trepidations about seeing Aguirre-Sacasa's name on this. I recognize that it is a fallacy to blame a Broadway musical's production issues on its playwright, but it's not as if people had real nice things to say about the story there either. In any event, I'm excited to see if JGL can get this one off the ground. Now the real question: will Audrey II be practical or CG?

What do you guys think? Would you see a 'Little Shop of Horrors' remake starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Is he too cool for the role now?

the only thing that worries me about the remake is that they will CGI audrey 2 which would be a real shame buts its hollywood they are not gunna use puppets anymore :(

I can only get jazzed for this if they go full bore comedy or horror.  The original straddled both as did the musical but as both these films succeeded in that, a totally one or the other approach would mine furtile ground.  I would lean more towards a full-fledged horror movie.  If it's just an updated remake of films one or two, then I have absolutely no interest in the project, no matter who is in it.

So, are they doing the Frank Oz musical or the Corman original? I love the musical film and can't see how you'd improve on it with a remake. The Corman one could be good if you tried to remake it as a horror film.

The only thing is they NEED a practical Audrey II, or at least mainly practical. We don't want another Serleena from Men in Black II.

I actually totally back this. If only, so we can have a movie adaptation with the original ending. I can totally see JGL as Seymore too.

As a fan of the Frank Oz film, I really have no reason to look forward to this. We have already had two versions of Little Shop, both of which are considered cult classics, so why dip into that same pool again for anything else other than a quick money grab? The special effects in Oz's musical version still stand up, so it isn't like they need to update the story for a new audience.

We will see. Maybe I'll just have to shut my yap like I had to with X-Men: First Class.

I'm only interested if it's the musical, and if it is I hope it retains the original ending.

a remake could be fun if they finally do the broadway ending and no CGI audrey II

Who's gonna voice ' I'm just a mean green mother from outer space..' ?

I'm not necessarily opposed to this, but why does Little Shop need to be remade? It's perfect for what it is, and it's still hilarious to this day.
