Jon Chu May Direct New Live-Action 'Masters Of The Universe' Movie

I have the power...to fill you guys in on an interesting bit of recent movie news. It appears that Jon Chu ('Step Up 3') is in negotiations to direct a new live-action film version of 'Masters of the Universe' for Sony. For anyone who never watched the cartoon or owned any of the action figures, 'Masters of the Universe' revolves around a young prince, Adam, who becomes a powerful warrior, He-Man, with the help of a magic sword, and who must then battle the sinister Skeletor to save Eternia. Apparently the studio has been talking about doing another big screen adaptation of the property for some time. In fact, a script by Alex Litvak ('The Three Musketeers') and Mike Finch has long been in place. Chu is currently working on reshoots for 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation,' which, as many of you know, was supposed to be released this summer but was pushed to next spring. As of yet, no official deal is on the table.

By the power of Grayskull, I am crazy excited for this. As a kid, 'Masters of the Universe' was such a big deal for me. Not only did I watch the cartoon, but I also had cases full of the action figures AND a Castle Grayskull playset...thank you very much. I didn't see the 1987 Dolph Lundgren film until I was an adult, and as lover of all things b-movie it played perfectly to an entirely new set of sensibilities. Do we need another live-action 'MotU' movie? Probably not. Does that dilute my enthusiasm at the prospect? Skel-No! I am really interested to see what Jon Chu does with this. He's a guy who has proven he can take b-movie fodder and create something spectacular. And yes, I'm referring to 'Step Up 3.' I know he could knock this one out of the park if only because the expectation for its quality would be staggeringly low.

What do you guys think? Could another 'Masters of the Universe' movie work on any level? Is Chu the right director? Who would you cast as He-Man and Skeletor? If you had the toys as a kid, which was your favorite action figure?

Wayne, thanks for posting that video.

A little additional info, at the time that He-Man was developed as a toyline he was a barbarian wondering a post apocalyptic world, that's why technology exists is a sword and sorcery story, but when the cartoon from FIlmation was developed it was decided that He-Man shouldn't conquer his world but rather inherit it, so he was given the secret identity of Prince Adam, Orko as comic relief and King Randor and Queen Marlena. But because the deal to develop the film was made by Mattel they didn't have the rights to any of the Filmation characters which is why they're not in the film.

By the way, the He-Man toyline could do with some fan support as it's in danger of being cancelled, please check out this video:

I was all about She-Ra back in the day.  I am only truly interested in this film if She-Ra is in it.

First of all, I think Co-Host wrote this! Second, the studio has hired John Chu and not an art film director, so they're not treating this like X-Men or Batman where it can be art inspired by a children's plaything, they're treating it like G.I.Joe as in a cash in.

Guys I'm a HUGE MOTU fan, in fact I'll bet I know more about it than anyone on this site and there's so much more to the franchise than the story of Prince Adam, unfortunately MOTU is a legal minefield, so I expect this project to run into some serious trouble!

I second the fact that Chris Hemsworth would be a good He-Man, and if they have to have a different Adam then Zac Effron. And, I'm basing everything on looks and not acting ability. Then again.... its a He-man movie.... what acting is necessary???

to all those who put shit on the original film just watch this and find out WHY it was messed up over the making of the film. I still love it for all its good and bad things BUT they were screwed over all the way while making this film. Watch this and see why
