J.J. Abrams 'Star Trek' Gets IMAX Release

Source: IMAX Corporation

Paramount Pictures and IMAX Corporation today announced that Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, "Lost" and "Alias"), will be simultaneously released to both IMAX® and conventional theatres worldwide on May 8, 2009.

Star Trek, which chronicles the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members, will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. Paramount Pictures will be the exclusive distributor of the film to IMAX theatres worldwide.

"We're excited to share the enhanced IMAX version of this film with the millions of dedicated fans who have been anticipating this release since production began," said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman, Paramount Pictures. "The IMAX Experience adds that extra level of excitement to an already action-packed film, giving moviegoers a premium 'event' at the multiplex."

Added J.J. Abrams, "I'm thrilled that audiences will be able to experience this new, epic world of 'Star Trek' - with an incredible cast and mind-blowing visual effects - on what is, obviously, the most remarkable film format in the world."

"'Star Trek' combines top Hollywood story-telling talent with space exploration, and each is very conducive to The IMAX Experience," said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "Expanding our relationship with Paramount Pictures to include this film strengthens our 2009 slate, and with the continuing rollout of digital IMAX theatre systems, we will be able to offer the fan-base more locations to experience the epic first journey of the USS Enterprise in the most immersive way."

"Both 'Star Trek' and IMAX have taken audiences to far away places they would normally not be able to go, and in this case, it's space - the final frontier," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "J.J. Abrams has created a powerful movie that has fans worldwide feverishly anticipating its release. We are thrilled to partner with Paramount Pictures to bring J.J.'s exciting vision of this incredible space adventure to IMAX screens."

@Cameron you are pretty wrong in your assumption that it will not attract new people. In the movie community I am apart of there have been a mass amount of younger users whom have never seen a single Star Trek episode or movie that are now starting to watch the movies and the TV series, and have reported great joy over watching them. Several are ecstatic over the quality and topics and are turning into true fans...all because of this new movie.

I think the Kobiashi Maru is in this movie isnt it? If it is, well you CANT get more star trek than that!

Nah, I'm not offended or anything like that, I have no problems with them trying to capture more audiences- that can only be a good thing. I'm just saying they should let mainstream audiences like Star Trek because it's...well, Star Trek!

Star Wars and Star Trek are trying to do very different things, so comparing them is like comparing Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson, and that's the real crux of the problem for me- Star Trek has always had action, and I'm all for sprucing up the trailer with that, but the trailer doesn't show ANYTHING other than the action, which isn't really what Star Trek has been about. Of course, that might just be the result of a really smart (or stupid, depends on your pov I suppose, haha) marketing team.

I'm a child of the early seveties, & I actually never watched Star Trek. Blasphemish I guess, but I was more a cops & robbers watcher (Hawaii5.o,Hill Street Blues) Then I saw Star Wars, & I refused to watch Star Trek because I never felt it would be the same. BUT...this movie has intrigued me. I will watch it, & mainly because it has the chance to show Star Trek from the beggining, & I will most likely watch the other star trek movies to follow the characters in their "later" years.
I believe this movie was designed to do what Casino Royale did to 007-reinvent the series, & capture a new audience as well. So I know I could be offending the purists like Kincard, but I am glad they've gone this way purely from an unbiased point of view. There's a chance for those who have not followed the Star Trek legacy to fully embrace it now. That's gotta be a good thing right?

Well I'm really looking forward to this. Between Lost, Allias, and Fringe I know J.J. has talent. Can't wait to see how he does this actually.

@ Kincard, It doesn't seem like they are looking past what Roddenberry had in mind. The story seems to be very solid, at least from what I have read. They are taking all the angels and showing every characters backstory, especially Spock and Kirk.

If you rewatch the original series you would see that most of the episodes are pretty weak story wise, only a few truly shine out. TNG was the true heavy weight on bringing forth the views of the vision. We have to remember that Kirk was from a totally different time than the other series. Starfleet and earth was more chaotic and striving with finding it's ground to stand on. They had a more action approch to things.

That's why I do believe this upcoming movie will stay true to Roddenberry more than people are aware. Because J.J. knows this. Kirk is living in a totally different Starfleet environment.

Like I said, it's from my impressions of the trailer, so my complaints are only based off extremely limited knowledge. I wasn't aware that the studio was "impressed with the story", but that's just something from rumor mills- it's not like they'd publish it if someone said "Wow this story sucks".

I'm not claiming that I'm right, but there's no real evidence it's going to be a good Trek film, either.

My problem isn't with reimagining of the physical world of Star Trek- I don't have any problem with that, my problem is that it feels like they're discarding the main ideas that Roddenberry created Star Trek for in favor of a dumb summer-action movie style.

Frankly, I don't care about canon, and I don't care if they changed the characters all they wanted, as long as they make it a Star Trek movie. The premise doesn't seem like it's the same at all- Star Trek is about exploring strange new worlds and humanity, and this just looks like another blow-em-up summer film. But like I said, it's the trailer- for all I know they made it that way so they can actually get people into the theatre first.

DS9 owned. Sisko popping Q in the face said it all about that franchise. "I'm NOT Picard!" lol.

I'm not opposed to IMAX format. I saw the Dark Knight in IMAX and it definitely had a different impact because some of the scenes were specifically designed for IMAX. I just hope this isn't just a means to pump $16 a ticket out of a movie goer. It's bad enough, movies in NYC are $11.75.

Knights of the Old Republic doesn't have any of the same characters, but it still has the basic elements of Star Wars. This new Star Trek movie doesn't appear to have anything in common with the original ST or TNG aside from character names- but that's just based off of the impressions of the trailer, so I obviously can't say anything solid yet.

And yeah, Voyager and Enterprise were pretty crappy.
