If it's crap ... We'll tell you
Back in April, it was reported that things were really starting to progress on the sequel to 1994's 'Dumb and Dumber.' The Farrelly Brothers were returning to direct, a script was in place, and both Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels had agreed to reprise their roles. In fact, it was announced that the film would begin shooting in September. Well, we now have to hit the brakes on this out-of-control, dog-shaped van as Jim Carrey has decided to exit the project. Apparently he is unhappy with what he perceives as a lack of support from Warner Brothers/New Line. The actor had this to say...
"I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer, after all it's implied in the title,"
Oh we agree, Jim, there was a marked level of brainlessness to this project. I still don't understand who the Farrelly brothers, Carrey, and Daniels thought were clamoring for a 'Dumb and Dumber' sequel, but once they all jumped on board, how did the studio not get 100% behind it? If you've been to theaters at all over the last few years, you are well aware of the emphasis major studios place upon brands; upon names people recognize and will blindly buy tickets to revisit. Sure, there was no reason to make a 'Dumb and Dumber' sequel, but there was also no reason to make a 'Dark Shadows' or 'Battleship' movie either. I have a feeling this would have driven a decent amount of business so I'm kind of shocked to hear the studio wasn't supportive. In fact, I'm incredulous to the point that I wonder if something else were really going on behind the scenes. I will say that if they don't have Carrey, they should really pull the plug lest we get another 'Dumb and Dumberer' situation.
