Back in February, it was announced that director Robert Rodriguez would be teaming up with Danny Trejo and returning to the 'Machete' universe for a sequel. The plot for 'Machete Kills' would apparently see the vigilante Machete battling drug cartels in Mexico...and also something about space weapons. In addition to Trejo, it now seems that Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez will be reprising their roles from the first film; an immigration agent and a badass rebel leader respectively. This bit of somewhat predictable casting news comes on the heels of the rumor that apparently Robert Rodriguez is also chatting with Mel Gibson about possibly appearing the 'Machete' sequel. No word yet on who Gibson would play and no official deal yet exists. Production on 'Machete Kills' is set to begin this spring with a third installment, rumored to be set in space, apparently also on the table.
Once again, I am not looking forward to another 'Machete' movie. As much as I enjoy exploitation and admire movies that are able to effectively capture the spirit of classic b-movies, Robert Rodriguez's attempt at a grindhouse film throwback just did not work for me. Therefore, unfortunately, the news that Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez will probably be coming back does little to boost my excitement for the sequel. However, this very up-in-air possibility of adding Mel Gibson to the mix intrigues me. Whatever your feelings toward the man on a personal level, Mel's a great actor and just crazy enough to fit right into this world. I will say that I just attended a screening of Mel's new film 'Get the Gringo' last night here in Austin and, during the Q&A, Mel mentioned that he and Robert were talking about this prospect earlier that day and he seemed quite upbeat about it. I won't presume to come to any conclusions based on that, but I can tell you that he's not opposed to it.
What do you guys think? Are you down for more 'Machete?'If so, are you happy Alba and Rodriguez are returning? What do you think about the possibility of Mel Gibson coming on board?

Comment by omnus on April 20, 2012 at 10:05am My only gripe about Rodriguez iilms is that his ambition outstrips his characters. You wanna do a movie about the evils of US immigration policy? Fine? But not 'Machete'. 'Machete' could've been an awesome action exploitation movie, in a similar vein to 'Black Dynamite'. It didn't need the pseudo-politics thrown in
Comment by Chad Ehrhart on April 19, 2012 at 10:13pm More like Meh-chete.
this piece of shit got a sequel...fucking really? really?
Comment by That hipster guy on April 19, 2012 at 9:54pm Yeah, planet terror was fun, but Machete was just the same thing but even longer and more boring and al that Jessica nude being CG. Well, I would be curious if Gibson is in the movie.
Comment by Waylander on April 19, 2012 at 8:39pm Alba acting was by the worst part of that movie, so i really don't want her back. Rodriguez on the other hand like always was pretty good and also SUPER hot so I would be happy to have her back.
If Mel Gibsion is in it that might get me to watch Machete imo was a let down.
Comment by The Chaz on April 19, 2012 at 4:13pm Planet Terror was enjoyable, but something felt off about the first Machete. I have a feeling it was an unhealthy combination of the his long-time editor taking on a decent portion of the directing, and being placed on the back-burner due to Rodriguez's heavy concentration of producing Predators. Hopefully it's better the second time around.
Comment by Marz on April 19, 2012 at 2:41pm Mel Gibson is totally crazy.

After Mel Gibson's screaming rant they released today (which takes place in front of a 15 year old kid and his mother, no less), I can say with absolute certainty that if Gibson is included in this film I won't be seeing it. Or any other film with him in it. Being a decent actor (and I do mean decent) does not make up for being a worthless human being.
