Jeremy Renner To Star In CIA Thriller 'Kill The Messenger'

What if you knew something you weren't supposed to know, and the government wanted you silenced? Such is the basis of the upcoming film 'Kill The Messenger.' Set to be directed by Michael Cuesta ('Homeland'), 'Kill The Messenger' is based on the tragic true story of Gary Webb, a reporter who committed suicide after purportedly being smeared by the CIA. Webb claimed to have uncovered evidence that the CIA was funneling weapons to Contra rebels in Nicaragua and importing cocaine into California. Peter Landesman ('Parkland') penned the script, basing the majority of it upon two separate books about the Webb incident. Now it appears the project has its star. Jeremy Renner has been set to star in the film, which is slated to begin production this summer.

I'm really interested in 'Kill The Messenger.' The story of Gary Webb, no matter how much of it you believe, is heartbreaking, and provides compelling basis for dramatic tension. In terms of espionage cinema, there are essentially two types of films. The first is the jingoistic spy film (in which a secret national hero works behind the scenes to save us), and the other is the enemy-within spy film (in which we can't trust our own government). 'Kill The Messenger' will certainly fall into the mistrust of government category. I'm interested to see, after the disappointment that was 'The Bourne Legacy,' how Renner does playing a civilian in that same spy movie category. Moreso than the star however, I'm extremely confident in the director for 'Kill The Messenger.' Cuesta has done a phenomenal job on Showtime's 'Homeland,' and I can't wait to see how he communicates a different type of enemy-within story.

What do you guys think? Does 'Kill The Messenger' interest you? Do you think it's a good fit for Renner?

At this pace, Jeremy will someday catch Morgan Freeman.

I could have done without knowing he committed suicide......

I hope this is going to be he Jeremy Renner film that doesn't make people wish they were watching Hawkeye in "The Avengers".

Well he sucked in Bourne Legacy, but that might have been due to the writing and direction.

Renner was on such a role after The Hurt Locker and The Town and now its just mediocre after mediocre movie. This could be interesting but it just sounds like every other Government is the enemy movie

I'm sick of Jeremy Renner!

I'm sure Renner will do a decent job with the character that will likely be molded a little like the character in the Constant Gardner. However, I enjoy Renner when he's playing darker edge characters like:
