Agatha Christie's most famous lady detective, Miss Marple, is being brought back to the big screen with a little help from Disney, who recently purchased the rights to the character after months of negotiations. The sweet, doddering old spinster - constantly knitting or weeding her garden - moonlights as an incredible sleuth with a heroically sharp intellect and solves mysteries as a hobby. The character is beloved worldwide, starring in 12 books and an avalanche of movies, radio dramas, and television shows from 1953 until as recently as 2004.
Thankfully, Disney has decided to spare us from all that and reboot the character in a modern setting as a hot Jennifer Garner in a script written by 'Fantastic Four' writer Mark Frost. No... seriously.
Changing the character so drastically is sure to confuse long-time fans of the series, and people who have never heard of Miss Marple aren't likely to care about a big screen adaptation of the character, so essentially Disney is banking on Garner's name and charm being enough to sell this film to the public.
Garner (who will also be co-producing the film) will have her work cut out for her, particularly in the American box office where the character isn't as widely known. And, while writer Mark Frost is probably best known for his atrocious 'Fantastic Four' and 'Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer' scripts, he also wrote a large portion of the weird mystery show 'Twin Peaks', so there's a chance he could pull out a truly great mystery flick based (even loosely, as it were) on Agatha Christie's original books.

Yeah sorry about that, didn't mean to come across as a cranky old #*@! no offense intended.
What's got us all riled up is the principle of changing a character so much, the fan community would be up in arms if Warners decided to chnge Batman to a cute little girl who solves crimes with her gadget toys and magic cat!

In truth, I really don't know who she is nor have I ever read anything by Agatha Christie.... maybe it was more of a British phenomenon and that's why I've never heard of Miss Marple over here in the states?
Is my "ignorance" really to blame if by no choice of my own I have never heard people talk about this series of books? there is no American movie, tv show, it wasn't required reading in my school growing up.
We get a lot of awesome stories from across the pond like Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Who, Mr Bean :-]
but evidently we missed this one...

Urgh! Fair enough if you've never heard of the character look her up! Don't ask who the f*** she is simply because of your ignorance!
@Gift of the Magi
Yeah good point with Sherlock Holmes, it bugs me a bit that fanboys argue that it's too far removed from the books, the writers did their homework (holmework?) with the character being a drug addict and making him an obsessive compulsive type. I've only seen the film once and it never occured to me that his deduction skills were the result of a mental disorder, but now that you pointed that out it makes sense, I'll have to get my hands on the DVD.

THIS IS A TRAVESTY!
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!
WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING?!
I EXPLICITLY ASKED FOR NO MAYONNAISE ON MY HAMBURGER!!!
.....oh hey, who the fuck is Miss Marple?!?
Comment by Gift of the Magi on March 30, 2011 at 8:22am Exactly. And do you know how long it took me to think of Ms. White? 4 minutes.
IN FOUR FUCKING MINUTES, I CAST THE MAIN ROLE BETTER THAN DISNEY! Now while I can accept a re-interpretation of a classic or a film loosely based on one, this apparently is a DIRECT take on the books...except they want it modern, much younger and sexy...and ignore ALL the little elements that made Miss Marple so interesting to begin with.
When they re-did Sherlock recently, they made them a bit younger and the story modern but ALSO they made the quirks and characters points both faithful and relavent. Take out pipe, add nicotine patches. Explain Sherlock massive jumps in logic to Asperberger's and incredible observation skills...and EXPLAIN those skills. Give Watson more of a role than being astonded. KEEP the heart and flavor of the series while leeting them live in the modern world (exactly how WOULD Sherlock be able to make a living today?)
Making Miss Marple 30-ish is....stupid. The entire character POINT is that she's very old, retired, a sweet lady in the twilight of her life that houses a razor-sharp mind and keen intelliect for solving crimes. Betty White is PERFECT for this role, so much so I cannot fathom why anyone could think otherwise.

I'm glad you posted the picture of betty White, I didn't think of it until just now but she'd be perfect for the part!
