Jaume Collet-Serra & Bradley Cooper Climbing Aboard 'Here There Be Monsters?'

Back in February it was reported that Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures were interested in signing Brad Bird to direct the two studios' joint history/fantasy mash-up 'Here There Be Monsters.' Brian Hegleland's script supposes a world in which Revolutionary-era American patriot John Paul Jones not only battled those dastardly redcoats, but also vicious sea monsters as well. Bird was in talks to replace Robert Zemeckis who left the project back in November. Now it seems Bird too has jumped ship and the studios are in negotiations with former 'Akira' remake helmer Jaume Collet-Serra to step into the director's seat. But Legendary Pictures/Warner Brothers have not yet begun to fight to get this project off the ground. In addition to working to secure Collet-Serra, they are reportedly also officially offering the lead role of John Paul Jones to Bradley Cooper ('The Hangover'). The plan is to begin production on 'Here There Be Monsters' in early 2013 to avoid conflicts with both Cooper's 'The Hangover III' and Collet-Serra's 'Harker.'

I am really looking forward to this film. My excitement for 'Here There Be Monsters' is not so much rooted in my desire to see more history/fantasy mash-up movies, but simply that I am a giant nerd for sea monsters. That being said, I feel the studios missed a major opportunity letting Brad Bird get away. After proving he could handle both live-action and lots-of-action in 'Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol,' I was pumped to see this Pixar darling dig into this material and bring us an epic studio monster movie with sea battles and giant squids. But, I suppose I have no reason to doubt Collet-Serra...as long as he comes in under budget and the production doesn't get shut down as it did on 'Akira.' As to Bradley Cooper, I really like the guy and I think he's a perfect fit for a roguish re-imagined John Paul Jones, but that could just be my unrelenting love for 'The A-Team' remake talking.

What do you guys think? Is Collet-Serra the right choice to direct? How do you feel about Cooper in the lead role?

I always give anything concerning monsters a chance. Bradley Cooper is likable enough. He was great in Limitless, so he has my vote. Bring on the monsters.

@ Lt. Commander Armstrong, don't worry about Akira, they're making a Bleach adaptation now. Whats the worse that can happen?

Anyone who willing participated in trying to make Akria live action is on my shit list. However, Cooper is an actor I want to see in a big budget sci-fi film.
