James McAvoy Rumored To Be Starring In 'The Crow' Remake

Of all the remakes currently in development across multiple studios, one that seems to be having a rough time getting off the ground is Relativity's 'The Crow.' At various points, actors like Mark Wahlberg and Bradley Cooper had been attached to star, but those developments have long since fallen through. Now, a source within the studio has revealed that James McAvoy is circling the role. If he officially signs on, he would play the lead role of Eric Draven, a man brought back from the dead to avenge his own murder as well as the murder of his fiancee. The original filmic adaptation of James O'Barr's graphic novel starred Brandon Lee and was marred by his tragic accidental on-set death. The remake is being helmed by F. Javier Gutierrez ('Before the Fall'), based on a script by Jesse Wigutow. At this point, no deal has been finalized.

With all due respect to Mr. McAvoy, I cannot understand why this remake has not been allowed to die. The Alex Proyas Crow film spawned a host of nigh unwatchable sequels that have all but destroyed public interest in this property. Granted, the graphic novel still has its fandom and I'm sure there are many who would like to see another version of this story on the big screen. However, is the public clamor for another 'Crow,' and the implied box office yield, so alluring that Relativity feels they must fight through false start after false start? Perhaps I wouldn't even be making this argument if not for the current selection for the protagonist. James McAvoy is a fine actor, but seeing him in this role is beyond difficult. While I am impressed with what he did with Professor Xavier in 'X-Men: First Class,' this is a third choice for this role that really does feel like a third choice. I suppose we will have to wait and see if the studio is able to secure their lead, something that has proven elusive for them thus far, before making final judgments.

What do you guys think? Is McAvoy right for the part? Will this remake every take flight?

Actually, I never really considered The Crow as a goth story...but more of a spiritual venting on James O'Barr's part. Folks...the Crow is O'Barr's way of dealing with a great tragedy in his own life, a terrible one...one that left him feeling dead inside, yet still walking. The story itself is fucking PAINFUL, as it what happens to our protagonists is horrific. None of the sequels have ever come close to the agony and despair the original created. I kinda see it as less a 'goth' tale and more about just how much damage can one person take and still keep going...and what is left in the end.

Lets face it, to redo the Crow is going to be touph. In this day and age. As Jpain and Frushay said, it was a film of its times.

Even the current comic books of the Crow by IDW publishing, while are not that bad, they fail to capture the feeling of the Crow's first graphic novel and its film. The artwork by James O'barr are amazing, these new ones just do not live up to them, and the stories are kind of bland as well.

In The Skinning the Wolves Storyline you have an unnamed person brought back by the Crow to kill the Nazis who murdered him. 4 things wrong with this comic series. 1. while its easy for me to root for some one fighting the nazis, this one does not cut it because 1 our of the thousands of concentration camp victims gets chosen for it? thats kind of insulting to me. 2. the artwork is just terrible. 3. the dialogue is not very good. 4 (and probably the weakest reason for me to dislike it) The artwork is in color. It does not have that same Gothic flair and feel of the original series due to terrible artwork as well as the color.

There is another one set in japan, which is a little better about an american brought back as the crow to kill his girlfriend who murdered him infront of her yakuza father, but bad artwork and color just makes me dislike it.

The only thing I can say for the Crow series to be revived would be to do something different from the films and shows. They all follow the same formula a "MAN" is brought back to avenge his death and a loved one. Why hasn't there been a woman brought back by the crow? For that matter a non Caucasian at that. I'm not asking for a black guy or black girl to wear the crow make up...(Admittedly the white and black face paint would look weird on any one of African descent...I tried dressing as the crow for Halloween in high school...did not look right)

Or an animated movie based on the original graphic novel, but do it like an animated sin city with the coloring. Since Goth is not in style at the moment (though it never wanted to be mainstream to begin with) Do it Noir-like. Noir and Gothic share some commonalities: 1. the two love the color black, 2. there is a beauty in the melancholy worlds, 3 the heroes are morally ambigues, but still better than the villeins who are often very evil to their core
 (Top Dollar was amazing).

As for James McAvoy? I'l give him a chance.

As long as the movie follows a simple but dark tale it should be fine, the last few movies got out of hand for being so mind blowingly stupid with it's own lore. After Wicked Prayer I figured I seen the knife slowly being twisted into the fans of The Crow. To do a reboot of The Crow I find it to be a scary idea. Let people remember The Crow of what it was to them during that time, and not horrible sequels and that one time it had a TV show.

I couldn't have said it better, JPain

As much as I love that flick & soundtrack, the zeal of it's cultural zeigeist has long passed. The alternative clubs I used to frequent back in the day are a shell of what they used to be.

The orginal was amazing, but it was also a sign of the times.  Goth was ushering it's way into society, and The Crow became their beacon.  The film was unique for it's time.  Now, well how many people groan as they pass Hot Topic...  Besides, I don't see anyway that they can imporve upon the original.  The character is so straight forward that there just isn't many other facets to explore with the Crow.  So without a clear other angle to look at, the best the film makers can hope for is to match the original, and I highly doubt that's happening.

I would love to see an animated version of the story - NOT LIVE.

This is the best choice so far.  Not saying it's a good one though.  I'm with you though, I hope this shit fucking dies.

it's been over a year since the director and writer were announced(I know I posted about it), so it sounds like the script is done. Also write marky mark was rumored for the role(same with Channing Tatum), cooper was the only officially announced.
