James Marsden Signs On To 'Anchorman 2'
It could be the popularity of the first film, or perhaps the showstopping bravado of the sequel's announcement, but it seems that anticipation is running very high for 'Anchorman: The Legend Continues.' Adam McKay re-teams with Will Ferrell to craft a followup to the smash hit 2004 comedy about arrogant, but powerfully magnetic newsman Ron Burgundy. The sequel already boasts the return of most of the original cast, which was in and of itself formidable, as well as the addition of Kristen Wiig as a potential love interest for Steve Carell's Brick Tamland. Now it appears James Marsden ('X-Men') has climbed aboard as well. The plot details are still largely being kept secret, but rumor has it that Marsden will play another anchorman; a rival to our beloved Burgundy. The film is set to begin filming next month in Atlanta ahead of its December 20th release.
This is fantastic news. I am a huge fan of Marsden, and while I think he did a great job as Cyclops, my affinity for him as a performer has little to do with his appearances in the filmic X-Men franchise. In fact, I think the fact that he became primarily known for playing this comic book hero for many years obscured audiences from his natural talent for comedy. The guy is incredibly funny. Luckily, between films like 'Enchanted' and his fantastic run on '30 Rock,' people have more recently come to recognize his comedic chops. Given that the cast of the first 'Anchorman' was a comedy dream team, I'm very happy to see Marsden added to those ranks above a more obvious contemporary funnyman choice like James Franco or Jonah Hill. It's a bit strange, however, that they are still casting the movie and won't even begin filming until next month if 'Anchorman: The Legend Continues' is due to be released in December, but perhaps McKay has settled into a comfortable routine with these comedies that allows him to be quite efficient. I only hope quality is not sacrificed for that efficiency.
What do you guys think? Is Marsden a good addition to the cast? Do you agree he's just as good in comedies as he is in superhero flicks?

Strange...I watched Napolean Dynamite when it came out, didnt laugh once. Later I revisited it and pissed myself laughing. Our brains are incredibly complex, I believe that movies appeal to each one of us in completely different ways, and there are a ton of factors to consider.

If you don't find Mel Brooks movies funny, I don't think that's a generational thing. I still find almost all of his movies hilarious. Think he's just a matter of taste.
Anchorman is a fairly typical Will Ferrel movie. Personally I never got it either. I was in college when it was released, along with Napoleon Dynamite. I never laughed at either one of them, but when I went to see Garden State, I was cracking up. Stupid humour just doesn't really do it for me. Have no desire to see this movie, regardless of what other actors they get in it.

I think it caught a lot of people at the right time. I was 16 when I saw "Anchorman" in theaters (when it came out). It was totally unexpected - the non-sequitors, the deadpan mugging, the memorable lines. It hasn't aged well, especially not with all the follow-ups that have gotten progressively worse. But at that time, there hadn't been a character like Ron Burgundy or a film like that.
People like me still have fond memories of that bizarre night of laughter and quotations the first time we saw it in theaters, at a young age, with our friends. I don't think future generations will find it nearly as charming without the element of surprise. Frankly, when I look back at Mel Brooks movies, I don't find them funny at all... maybe that will happen with Anchorman.

He's my first choice to play Chicago wizard/private investigator Harry Dresden. He'd also be good if they ever decided to bring F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack to the big screen.
