It's an ape planet, we're just living on it. Well, after the dramatic climax of Rupert Wyatt's 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' there may not be too many of us living on the planet by the time the sequel rolls around. One human whose likelihood of making it to the next movie is dwindling fast is James Franco. Franco played Caesar's benevolent caretaker in 'Rise,' but in a recent interview, he revealed that we shouldn't hold our breath for his reprising the role in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'...
"I was going to be a small part of the next one. There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. A lot of the human characters that were in the first movie were dead in the sequel that Rupert was going to direct. But there was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left. Now Rupert's not a part of it so I don't know. My guess is I won't be in it. Nobody's talked to me since Rupert left."
This can often happen when the leadership on a film changes, but that doesn't mean we have to like it. Regardless of your personal feelings toward Franco's catalog, the fact is that he provided a empathetic emotional anchor for Caesar and was so important in the ape leader's story arc. I happen to think he did a fantastic job in 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' and was looking forward to his return. Sure, there is something to be said for progressing the story far enough that humanity's numbers have been greatly reduced, but that doesn't necessarily preclude Franco's character from reappearing. I am quite intrigued by the idea of his turning up on a video as Caesar continued his conquest of the Earth. It would've added an affective complication to his power struggle. My hope is that Matt Reeves will end up liking this idea as well. I trust Reeves to do what's best for the movie, and therefore maybe, doubtful as it may seem, we haven't seen the last of Franco in this franchise.
What do you guys think? Would it disappoint you if James Franco is not in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' in any way? At the beginning of the sequel, how far into Caesar's conquest of the planet do you think we'll be?

"Regardless of your personal feelings toward Franco's catalog"
I'm just curious, why would anyone have a problem with his catalog? He's been on a steady course since 2008.
"He seemed like the "IT" guy just last year, now I haven't seen him in much of anything. It's too bad, I like Franco."
Sometimes, good actors need a break. DiCaprio, Hanks, Clooney have all done this at some point.
Comment by Venkat on December 18, 2012 at 11:18pm Obviously he is not there. He will be one of the first to die from the virus.
Comment by Joe Cool on December 18, 2012 at 10:54pm It seems to me they'd be blowing it without Franco. He was central in the last film and would be necessary to anchor a sequel to the original if they chose to begin to far off from where the last one left off. As mentioned, he would create s strong conflict within Ceaser as well.

Comment by Lastsuperjedi on December 18, 2012 at 6:38pm I think its a little premature to get angry about this. While I love James Franco, we don't even know if having him in the movie would benefit it. If the story doesn't call for him, why force him in the story?

Comment by King Badass on December 18, 2012 at 5:11pm Man I really do hope DOTPOTA is good, they better not fuck this film up is all I can say.
I just hope the third one is a remake of the original Charlton Heston film. I actually wouldn't mind a remake since I would really like to see a technologically advanced ape society like in the book.
