Sylvester Stallone may be getting on in years, but he is in no way slowing down. Not only is he about to headline an all-star cast of ass-kickers in 'The Expendables 2,' set to release this month, but he is also going to be appearing with Arnold Schwarzenegger again in Mikael Hafstro's 'The Tomb.' Not only that, but he'll also be starring alongside Jason Momoa ('Conan') in Walter Hill's 'Bullet to the Head' early next year. And on top of all of that, Stallone has written a new script that will be produced by Millennium Films. 'Homefront,' based on the novel by Chuck Logan, centers on a former DEA agent who moves into a small town hoping to lead a quiet life. Unfortunately, the town is run by a ruthless meth dealer named Gator. Jason Statham will be playing the lead role of the former agent, and it was just announced that James Franco will take on the Gator role. Stallone will also serve as producer with Gary Fleder ('Runaway Jury') directing. Shooting is slated to begin in September in New Orleans.
I know there are plenty of people out there who will be quick to make jokes about Stallone's abilities as a writer. Just because the guy talks slow and has starred in some cheesy action movies does not mean the he can't pen a script. He wrote the screenplays for 'Rocky' and 'First Blood' for crying out loud. And I still maintain that 2008's 'Rambo,' for which he wrote the script and served as director, was a phenomenal conclusion to the 'First Blood' franchise. I am very much looking forward to seeing what he does with 'Homefront.' I like Statham despite his becoming sort of innocuous in action cinema lately. The choice to make Franco the villain is a bold one, not sure I agree with it. I mean, is he going to be the evil version of his character from 'Pineapple Express?' The flipside of that is I'm sure plenty of people thought that it was weird to cast the dad from 'Malcolm in the Middle' in a show about a high school science teacher who sells meth...and that seems to have worked out just fine.
What do you guys think? Are you interested in 'Homefront?' Could you see Franco as a villain?

Comment by Hendrix on August 3, 2012 at 3:08am did the writer forget about spiderman 2 and 3 where franco was the lead villain? He is a good actor he should be fine.
Comment by Brinkman on August 2, 2012 at 4:12pm I think James Franco is a great actor and have no worries with him taking the role. Wasn't he sort of a villain in the Spiderman trilogy?

Comment by Matthew Wong on August 1, 2012 at 7:03pm I don't see Franco playing a meth dealer too unrealistic, especially considering the role he's playing in Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers
