Jackie Earle Haley Joins 'Robocop' Remake

When it was initially announced that there was a remake to Paul Verhoeven's 'Robocop' on the table, I have to admit I was a bit perturbed. The original was so formative to my film geekiness and also deeply ensconced in 80s culture, how could anyone possibly recreate that in a contemporary setting? But director Jose Padilha ('Elite Squad: Enemy Within') has a great concept for the new film that, after he explained it, put my mind at ease. On top of that, so far the remake has amassed a staggeringly impressive cast. Joel Kinnaman ('The Killing') will be taking on the role of Alex Murphy, and the cast is rounded out by the likes of Hugh Laurie, Samuel L. Jackson, and Gary Oldman. Now it appears Jackie Earle Haley ('Watchmen') is climbing aboard as well. Haley will be playing a character named Maddox who is responsible for Robocop's military training. There are also rumblings that Jay Baruchel is circling a leading role. The film is set to be released August 9th, 2013.

This makes me so incredibly happy. One of the best aspects of the original 'Robocop' was its outstanding cast: Peter Weller, Ronny Cox, Nancy Allen, and Kurtwood Smith. That's why I'm thrilled that the studio is so dedicated to bringing in such immensely talented performers for the remake. Jackie Earle Haley, in my opinion, is a terribly underrated actor. He was great in 'Watchmen' and on the Fox series 'Human Target,' and I even liked his interpretation of Freddy Krueger (though I recognize I'm in the minority there). He adds a unique balance between intensity and witty comedic sensibilities. The fact that Robocop is going to receive military training could suggest that the new suit will allow for a bit more range of movement than did the original. As much as I like Jay Baruchel, I wonder how well he would fit into this film? But then, I haven't read the script so I don't know all the facets of its character lineup.

What do you guys think? Are you happy Jackie Earle Haley is joining the cast? Would you be in favor of Baruchel coming aboard as well?

I'm a bit skeptic on this one. So far, the past 2 remakes that Haley was in weren't very good, and the fact that he's going to be apart of a remake of one of my favorite movies of all time...I don't know. But I'll still see it, because it has Samuel L. Jackson.

He WAS Rorschach. His performance in that movie was incredible, and totally captured his essence. I'm glad he's getting work.

Jackie Earle Haley made watchmen great, i thought he did a great job compared to the rest of the cast. I love the original and i just watched it again a few days ago and it was awesome. I'am not apposed to remakes or reboots so i'am looking forward to this.

Wait so Jackie is not playing a bad guy in Robocop; will there be a cameo of the Dad from That 70 Show?

Fuck Baruchel hard - unless his voice is dubbed
