J.J. Abrams To Direct 'Star Wars Episode VII'?

It is with the most trepidations fingers that I type the words of that headline. Since Disney purchased Lucasfilm last October, and almost immediately announced a new 'Star Wars' movie for 2015, the hunt for a director has been in full swing. Rumor after rumor cropped up online, and all were soundly debunked. Names like Ben Affleck, Guillermo del Toro, Brad Bird, and Colin Trevorrow were batted about as was J.J. Abrams. Abrams was quick to "decline involvement" the job and even mentioned during an interview that his fierce loyalty - and three film contract - to 'Star Trek' (which would be going head-to-head with the revamped 'Star Wars' franchise) is what led him to pass on the opportunity. Well now it looks as if all that talk of loyalty may have just be a deflection. A single source is announcing that Abrams has in fact been hired to direct 'Episode VII'. Abrams has been working on 'Star Trek Into Darkness,' which opens on May 18th.

Again, the sheer plethora of rumors surrounding this movie, and more specifically this gig, have me hesitant to voice any feeling on the apparent Abrams selection. As of right this moment, the source appears to have information from "an individual with knowledge of the production", but the source reporting that he'd turned down the role (i.e. Abrams himself) also seemed on the level. Of course things can change, but that's precisely the problem isn't it? That said, assuming for a moment that Abrams is absolutely directing 'Episode VII,' Disney/Lucasfilm has made the right choice in my opinion. Abrams is a fantastic filmmaker with a reverence for sci-fi classics. He has the support of fanboys, and has already demonstrated a knack for rebooting iconic franchises. His particular aesthetic choices may get under some people's skin (i.e. the lens flares), but you've got to give him credit for his adept visual storytelling. I am 100% on board with this, and my only remaining question is whether John Williams or Michael Giacchino will be doing the music for the new 'Star Wars.'

Alright guys, weigh in. What do you think of Abrams possibly landing the job of directing 'Episode VII?' Would that be a good call by Disney?

How i feel about JJ directing it- i feel ok. im not super exited, but im not worried. i like JJ's film stuff: Cloverfield, Super 8, Star Trek. ive sampled his tv stuff and they never hooked me. but this is film, so i think itll be ok.

on the extras of the Star Trek dvd, he said "star trek to me was classical music, and star wars was rock n roll", referring to his inspiration for the trek reboot. so he clearly has undying respect for the galaxy far far away, and im cool with that.

The last Star Wars movie he directed was pretty good, so this should be no exception.

Giacchino was actually my choice for composer when I put together my Episode VII Dream Team a while ago.

BoneMage, I know, I didn't say he called the first film the fourth episode right there on day one.
