Ito's District 9 Review

I have to say, I was pumped for this movie, this was the movie that I thought was going to save the summer. Lets face it, it has been a shitty summer for movies, everything I saw( besides The Hangover) has disappointed me(Yes even Star Trek, witch I think is EXTREMLY overrated, but I still enjoyed it). So i was hoping this movie to come out and be this summers Dark Knight and completely WOW me. Did it. No. But it is really, really fucking good.

I was hooked right from the begining. It starts off as a Mockumentry(if you will) telling you about whats going on, why the aliens(or "Prawns") are stuck, and that they've been here for about 20 years. I must say that this movie is groundbreaking. And I know that I just said it wasn't amazing, but its groundbreaking because of the way it tells a story, I didn't know people could make scifi movies like this any more, and it sets new standerds for the genre. Storys don't need to have a happy ending to make you feel good in the end, they don't need to have explosions every second just to get it movie. It truely does break the mold.

There is little to non of bad things to say about this movie. A very minor problem I have is that the begining could have been trimed down a little. I would have sorta like it better if the story was told more through the eye's of Wikus, the main role of the story, Like if we figured out everythin as he did, and while the movie does this, I don't think they do it as good as I would have liked. He has I very good character arc, to a nerd sorta of an asswholeish guy, into a hero. It feels beleivable, you really do think that by the end that this guys going to save the day, and you really want him to.

So the only minor problem I have is I thought the pace was just a little bit off, but thats just me, its different for everybody. This is a Scifi movie of epic proportions, the special effects are amazing, and the movies great. While I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel, its doesn't really need one. This isn't a huge hollywood blockbuster, or a dumb summer film, but its not wining any oscars(at least not the importent ones), You will walking out of the movie with a great feeling, and while my mind wasn't blown, I'm sure yours will be.
